Hello, I have an Master of Science degree in Journalism and a double Bachelor's degree in Public Administration and Journalism. I will be pleased to help you develop a passion, as I have, for the English language arts such as, writing and reading.

I have always been excited about writing. First, as an elementary student creating poetry, as a teenager writing about social issues, and then as an adult writing magazine articles. Writing can be fun once the student learns sentence structure and grammar rules. For elementary students, I try to make learning fun. During a writing workshop one summer, a student told me he had never written a story. After tutoring him privately for a few weeks, and commenting on his Spiderman tee shirt, he handed in three stories (one on Spiderman) that he had written himself. He was very proud that he had accomplished what he initially feared.

I have tutored students in reading. One student's eyes lit up when she read her first few pages with no prompting from me. What I find that helps students succeed in reading is if they are tutored reading a book on topics they enjoy.

A newer skill that I have developed is in teaching English as a Second Language. I have been successful in helping those with limited skills to read, write, speak, and understand English much better.

Let's do it!!

Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I am qualified to tutor in Public Speaking because I am familiar with the English language; and have spoken before audiences on many topics and in many forums. When I was first asked to make a public speaking appearance, I took a public speaking course. In addition to the above, I attended several Toastmaster sessions in the 1980s. I took a nine-month long Professional Development Course in 1983-1984 through my City of Chicago employment that included sessions on public speaking. My actual public speaking ranges from 1974 - 2012. I was a state-wide candidate for public office in 1974 wherein I made many speeches before the public. I spoke before Planned Parenthood, the National Alliance of Black Feminists, the Black Women's Struggle for Equality, the Illinois Affirmative Action Officers Association, and many others. I have been a panelist for various organizations such as Kenwood-Oakland Community Organization and Citizens Institute. I have been on the radio for the American Cancer Society, the Chicago Association of Realtors, and the Peace Corps. I have made television presentations on behalf of the Peace Corps.

Elementary (K-6th)

When I tutor elementary grade students, I first find out where they are in the subject and then structure an individualized lesson plan around their needs. I find out what interests them and prepare many sessions around their interests; for instance, if they like sports, I will help them select books on sports. Whenever possible, I work along with the students' teachers on the core educational goals by teaching the basics of English, reading, and study skills. I also plan activities that will better help them listen and think. In reading, I help them sound out words and I also use phonics. I engage the students through interactive games and a varied curriculum.

Study Skills

When I was in college, I used several methods to help me study for a particular subject. If one was not already formed, I put together a study group. This was very helpful because we each felt comfortable stating what areas confused us. It also was helpful because I could ask questions that I was afraid of asking in the classroom. I found another study method and that was using index cards where I would put a question on one side and the answer on the other. I would pull out the cards anywhere I was - on the bus, in a long waiting line, and even during television commercials. It is also important to set aside time to study and select the atmosphere conducive to study. Some study well listening to soft music, others need absolute quiet. Reading on the subject cannot be over-emphasized. This is one study skill that will help greatly in learning the subject.

A very excellent and knowledgeable tutor, most highly recommended.

Dear Hazel, Thank you very much for your work with our student to date. His English has improved tremendously. He is now much more at ease with English, he asks questions, readily joins in conversation and in fact initiates conversation, none of which was happening before his work with you! We are extremely pleased not only with his progress, but most especially with you as his teacher. Your expertise, patience, teaching manner, dedication, in class exercises and homework exercises are most commendable! The monastery's budget for ESL classes has been exhausted at this point. Unfortunately, his time with a tutor must end at this time. If this situation changes at any point, I will be in touch with you, as we would continue with you in an instant! Once again, Hazel, thank you very, very much for your time and effort with him. We really appreciate it. Peace and blessings.

Patient and knowledgeable

Ms Hazel is very good at what she does. She is patient, she took the time to pinpoint how my child learns best, then focuses on that technique. She is a very sweet lady and my child actually looks forward to her sessions.

Trinacia, 20 lessons with Hazel

Trinacia, Thank you so much for the kind words. Amyrie is a good and willing student. She is eager to learn, and shows that by listening, and by the questions she asks. I appreciate her. And, I am grateful for the opportunity to join in the teaching of this very bright and inquisitive girl. Hazel
