As a lifelong learner, my greatest joys are the A-ha moments when things suddenly make sense or you discover something that changes the way you view the world. I love breaking down concepts in creative ways to help people personally connect, understand, and absorb key information. I've been tutoring since I was in elementary school myself and have had a diverse array of teaching experiences over the decades since then. I have instructed all ages from Kindergarten to young adults, but my background is best suited for high school students.
I received my B.S. in Biological Sciences from Stanford University, with the goal of attending medical school. I went through the entire application process and was admitted to several schools, but ultimately decided it was not the path for me. That journey gave me the opportunity to teach MCAT (medical) and DAT (dental) test prep courses through Kaplan Test Prep, which refined my science content knowledge and gave me experience in higher level course instruction. I also offered individual tutoring, through Kaplan, in SAT/ACT prep.
In college, I was President of a volunteer group with the mission of promoting health education in local schools. I designed the curriculum, managed the organization, and taught lessons. Throughout all 4 years as an undergraduate, I provided individual English language tutoring sessions for Kindergarten-2nd grade students through Stanford's Ravenswood Reads program. During college, and for years afterwards, I offered individual peer tutoring sessions for college-level coursework in math and science.
As a science teacher at Landmark High School (a private school in Massachusetts), I gained valuable skills in working with language-based learning disabilities and engaged in Special Education training through Simmons College. I taught Chemistry classes, provided one-on-one reading and writing tutorials, and worked with the residential team to provide out-of-class educational support for the boarding students.
