About Adam

I absolutely love helping students succeed, and have been involved in the field of education since the late 1990s. I am an expert on local history, and have experience working for an educational publishing company, where I worked in the field of research and fact-checking. I have contributed to many U. S. and World History texts, and have my own published works as well (including The Founders and Early History of Geneva). I have taught Advanced Placement European History and APUSH for many years, and have enjoyed extremely high pass rates throughout this time (thanks in large part to the students' hard work!). During my years at the Princeton Review, I helped students increase their scores on the ACT, SAT, and GRE exams, and had some of the best score improvements in North Carolina. I have taught at the Governor's School in Mississippi, in central North Carolina, in New York State, and here in Illinois. I was a history major and physics minor at Northwestern University, and earned a full scholarship to graduate school.

I enjoy tutoring history, reading, math, science, and English, and am well-versed in all academic fields. I have experience in tutoring subjects including: SAT math, reading, and writing; ACT math, reading, English, and science; American, European, and World History; Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Prealgebra, Trigonometry, elementary math, geometry; geography; GED; and more, and am qualified to tutor in each of these fields. My Scholastic Bowl team has qualified for nationals several times, and working together, we have achieved numerous Conference Championships. I have been married for fifteen years, and have two wonderful children, aged 8 and 5, both of whom LOVE to read. I collect antique books and newspapers, and have led several historic walking tours in the Fox Valley. I hope you will consider me for your tutoring needs!

I taught ACT math for the Princeton Review, and scored a 33 on my own ACT in high school. I received a perfect score (36) on my own ACT Reading section, and taught this subject for the Princeton Review as well. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation named me a Commended Student for my PSAT score (above the 96th percentile) and my GRE score was in the 98th percentile nationwide. My ACT scores were in the top 1-4% nationwide as well, and I was admitted to every undergraduate school for which I applied (including Cornell, Northwestern, etc.). The techniques I learned at TPR allow me to show students how to find correct answers and avoid traps set on all standardized tests. I help students understand how to solve each problem, and how to eliminate incorrect answer choices. I am one of a small number of tutors with actual experience tutoring the GRE and ALL areas of both the ACT and SAT.

I have (literally) written the book on early Geneva and Kane County history, and am currently close to completing a new work on the history of Campton Township. I've taught history (including at the AP level) for seventeen years, and am the current President of Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley. Our group received the Richard H. Driehaus Award for Historic Preservation three years ago (in Advocacy).

I am looking for students excited to improve their test scores, and to learn more in their fields of interest! Please contact me with any questions about tutoring, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I scored in the top five percent of test-takers nationwide on the math sections of the SAT, ACT, and GRE. I worked for the Princeton Review, and have a minor in physics from Northwestern University.

ACT Reading

I received a perfect score (36) on the Reading section of my ACT, and have tutored this section of the test (and all others) for the Princeton Review.

ACT Science

Received a high score in the ACT Science section (33) and I have helped many students improve their scores in this area by more than five points. I find that this area is the second-easiest area in which students can improve. I was a tutor for the Princeton Review, and use a variety of techniques to help students improve their scores.

Algebra 1

Algebra is an area that can be difficult for many high school students. When I taught high school full time, I worked with students at all ability levels. I can explain algebra concepts clearly, and have been helping students in this field since 1998. I'm a top 1-3% scorer in the math sections of the SAT, ACT, and GRE.

Architecture

I have taken courses on architecture, including many in the field of historic preservation as part of a certificate program at Northwestern University. I have studied historic architecture for years, and am the President of Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley, a group which specializes in historic preservation of homes that are significant both historically and architecturally. I have put together architectural walking and bus tours, and have taught how to recognize major styles of architecture in my APUSH and AP European History classes.

European History

I was an AP Euro teacher for seventeen years, and created the curriculum from scratch. We used John McKay's primary text, and Dennis Sherman's secondary text. I also led eight student tours of Europe. Achieved a very high pass rate (most years over 80%).

Geography

Over my years teaching high school, I had the pleasure of helping guide students through coursework in AP Human Geography. Our school offered this course as an independent study only, but I was the one and only teacher assigned to these students when they elected to pursue taking that challenging exam.

Geometry

Geometry has always been one of my favorite subjects. I was a physics minor in college, and my coursework in math and in physics required a mastery of this subject. Since 1998, I've helped students improve their understanding of geometry, and I've worked with young men and women at all ability levels. I am a former Princeton Review tutor, and I'm a top 1-3% scorer in the math sections of the ACT, SAT, and GRE.

GRE

I am a top 5% scorer in all areas of the GRE. I have tutored for the GRE at the Princeton Review, and independently, both with great success. This is a difficult test, and I *highly* recommend going with a tutor with actual GRE experience. Make sure you ask the prospective tutor how they did on the exam! :)

Praxis

I took the Praxis I test to obtain my Illinois teaching license. I have tutored all subject areas of the Praxis I - reading, writing, and mathematics. I received a passing score the one and only time I took the exam. The Praxis II covers subject areas and I would be able to tutor the Social Studies/history subject test here. I obtained highly qualified status some years ago, in social studies.

Prealgebra

I've been helping students in all areas of mathematics since 1998. Prealgebra can be a very difficult for someone who is not a "math person." I've taught students at all levels and can explain all pre-algebra concepts with clarity. I was a physics minor at Northwestern, and have taken advanced coursework in mathematics.

PSAT

I was named a Commended Student by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for my performance on the PSAT. I received a Letter of Commendation and acknowledgement by my community for my achievement on this exam (top 3% nationwide).

SAT Math

Although the SAT Math section has changed over the years, I've kept current with the types of questions on the "new" (2016+) SAT, and have adjusted my instruction accordingly. I'm a top 1-3% scorer on the math sections of the ACT, SAT, and GRE, and I'm a former Princeton Review tutor. I was a physics minor at Northwestern University, and took advanced coursework in mathematics there.

SAT Reading

I have been helping students improve their SAT scores since 1998, and I have seventeen years' experience teaching at the high school level. I've worked with students from all backgrounds, and at all ability levels. I'm a published author, and worked for an educational publishing company for many years. I am a former Princeton Review tutor, and over the years I've learned several helpful strategies which I'm able to explain clearly to those who wish to improve their SAT scores.

SAT Writing

I have taught numerous SAT courses, including for the Princeton Review. I'm a published author, and worked for an educational publishing company for many years. I've contributed to more than a dozen Social Studies textbooks.

Social Studies

I have been a high school Social Studies teacher since 1999. I hold an Illinois teaching license in this field, and have taught courses such as regular U. S. History, AP U. S. History, AP European History, Western Civilization, and Area Studies. I have tutored in this field as well, and have taken advanced coursework for many years. I have also worked for an educational publisher, and have worked on helping to create over a dozen social studies texts for McDougal Littell.

Trigonometry

I've helped students with trigonometry since 1998, when I was hired as a tutor by the Princeton Review. I was a physics minor at Northwestern, and took courses in advanced mathematics. I have seventeen years' experience teaching high school students (all levels).

World History

I taught Western Civilization for seventeen years, and Area Studies for a shorter period. My degrees are in the field of history, and I've contributed to more than a dozen Social Studies textbooks. I have expertise in both European and North American history, plus coursework in Asian and African history.

Writing

I worked for McDougal Littell for six years, and worked as a fact-checker and researcher in their Social Studies division. I contributed to over a dozen major history textbooks, including "The Americans," still widely-used at the high school level. Helped with editing and titles, and worked as a freelancer for them on numerous projects. I've written a two-volume illustrated history (published by Higginson Books) earlier this year (2017), and wrote a history of Geneva in 2014.

Extremely knowledgeable in SAT and ACT tests

My daughter wanted more in depth review for the SAT and ACT math sections to ensure acceptance into the College of Engineering. Adam is very knowledgeable and showing her short cuts and quick tricks. He is very fluent in the tests and type of questions that trip up people. She has enjoyed working with Adam and we are looking forward to see the results once she retakes the SAT and ACT test. Hig
