I'm a professional writer and editor who graduated from Notre Dame magna cum laude in Ancient Greek with a second major in philosophy. I have hundreds of hours' experience tutoring Latin, logic (philosophy), algebra, and standardized test prep (SAT/ACT) online to students ranging from six years old to age 70+.

Formal logic can be so intimidating, and there is so little good help available for it online. Every class approaches the subject a little bit differently and that makes it very hard to find guidance. So let me be your Vergil, escorting you through the hellscape of logic translations, operators, derivations, rules of inference and replacement, nested quantifiers, truth tables, truth trees, and the like. I have taught the basics of logic to a six-year-old -- I can probably teach it to you, too.

Speaking of Vergil, I studied Latin for eight years between high school and college, and I continue to be a lifelong learner in the subject. For fun, I translate Caesar's Commentaries on the Gallic Wars. I can meet you in Latin wherever you are. I have a copy of the introductory texts for nearly every major curriculum -- e.g. Ecce Romani, Latin for the New Milennium, The Oxford Latin Course, etc.

But English writing is my true area of expertise. If you've written up a draft of that big paper, then I am just the person to help proofread and polish it for you.

Please send me a message on Wyzant -- I respond quickly and I can find availability for nearly any schedule.

Latin

Latin

My college major was Greek, which had a Latin requirement to go with it, but really I am better in Latin. I have been studying Latin in some form almost constantly since 7th grade. This year I have been translating Caesar for fun.
Logic

Logic

I second-majored in philosophy at Notre Dame, and now I regularly tutor students in propositional and first-order logic, truth tables, natural deduction proofs, and the like. I can help you understand premises and conclusions, logical consistency, tautology, rules of inference and replacement, fundamental rules of deduction, quantifiers, conditional proofs, proof by contradiction, formal and informal fallacies, etc. Starting from nothing but the fundamental intro and elim laws, I have helped students on Wyzant derive DeMorgan's law (all four ways), the distributive law of conjunction over disjunction and vice versa, disjunctive syllogism, the law of double negativity, the commutative law, and the tautological "A or not A." When it comes to logic, there isn't much online to go on. Let me help you out, you'll understand a lot better by the time we're done.
Philosophy

Philosophy

As a second philosophy major who studied logic and retained alove for this often-frustrating subject, I regularly tutor propositional and first-order logic, truth tables, natural deduction proofs. I can help you understand premises and conclusions, rules of inference and replacement, fundamental rules of deduction, quantifiers, conditional proofs, proof by contradiction, formal and informal fallacies, logical truth, consistency, etc. Starting from nothing but the fundamental intro and elim laws, I have helped students on this platform derive DeMorgan's law (all four ways), the distributive law of conjunction over disjunction and vice versa, disjunctive syllogism, the law of double negativity, the commutative law, and the tautological "A or not A." When it comes to logic, there isn't much online to go on, and the professors of this topic can be outright sadistic in what they're willing to throw at first-year students even in the first week or two of class. Let me help show you the ropes -- I promise you'll understand what's what the time we're done.

Logic

David has been kind, helpful, and patient throughout my tutoring sessions for Logic. I was having a very difficult time understanding proofs and had a test coming up that I knew I couldn’t pass without help. In just a few sessions he helped me to understand the material my class was covering and I actually was able to make an A on the exam I was so terrified of. I will continue my sessions and hope to do well in the class now! I recommend David to anyone struggling with Logic.

Patient and adaptable tutor

David has worked hard to help me understand Logic. Specifically proofs, subproofs, and the rules. I cannot stress how patient David has been with my ignorance on this topic. I have a tendency to make things harder than they are and he has a great way of helping me simplify my thoughts and the task at hand.

Lezlie, 2 lessons with David

Very knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely willing to help.

Other than the fact that David clearly had a very good grasp of the subject matter, he was kind and patient and overall showed a genuine willingness to help. Highly recommend!

Knowledgeable, Very Intelligent, Patient, Easy to Understand

David excels at making complex ideas accessible. He skillfully relates ancient Greek philosophers like Plato and Socrates to modern concepts and things one already understands. His explanations are excellent, and he's also very encouraging. David speaks to a student at a level they can understand, making for an informative, edifying lesson.

Big Help

David is getting me where I need to be. He helped me master truth tables; now, we are confronting truth trees and then predicate logic. He is flexible in his hours and he goes out of his way to accommodate my needs.

Focused and productive sessions

David is responsive and stays focused during Latin tutoring sessions with my son. His weekend availability is also very helpful. He follows up after each session as well, so that's great!

Great teacher

David has such a great way of explaining complicated concepts. I also appreciate his patience. My son was struggling with Intermediate Logic and now it is all making sense to him.

Exceptional Latin Tutor

My daughter is currently taking Latin 1 in High School and has been working with David for approximately 4 months. His tutoring has helped bring her grade to an A and his ability explain the material in an interesting way has greatly increased her interest in this difficult subject. My daughter’s high school teacher has, on several occasions, let my daughter know how much he is impressed with her improvements in the subject compared to her peers. David is our go-to tutor for Latin and my daughter wouldn’t consider using anyone else. I highly recommend him for the encouragement he provides, his friendly and helpful demeanor, his overall knowledge in the subject, and his effectiveness is communicating the subject in a manner that is easy to understand. He makes himself available. It is also easy to book sessions with him. In addition to Latin, he has also provided great tutoring assistance in the review of some of my daughter’s English papers.
