Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

I am highly qualified and certified in elementary education. I have taught in the classroom for four years in the capacity of my own classroom in addition, to serving as an instructor for my local school district in K-3 math instruction. Moreover, I have also taught gifted students in k-3rd grades in math and science classes. My experience thus far for elementary education includes 8 years of teaching experience.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I have had wonderful opportunities to teach a diverse group of students in math, including those with learning disabilities, those who perform at grade level and below, and those who are gifted/exceptional. My strategies include, guiding students through the solution process. I ask the student leading questions that will direct the student towards the correct steps. I also help by teaching concepts. These strategies provide my students with the opportunity to become independent learners. In math instruction, it is important to teach concepts rather than just processes or procedures. When students understand the concepts and build a foundation, they are more likely to remember the procedures.
Handwriting,

Handwriting

I have taught children handwriting skills throughout my teaching career. Strategies I use involve a developmental sequence. I use multisensory approaches to incorporate a sense of fun and engagement during activities. In addition, I build on prior knowledge so that students are not frustrated with the handwriting process.
Phonics,

Phonics

As an elementary teacher, I am certified in reading and language development. I have had the opportunity to help students learn phonics in order to help them learn to read. Through my phonics instruction, I supplement a strong reading program so that students develop a love for reading as well.
Reading,

Reading

As a teacher, I have taught and tutored children in reading for 6 years in addition to working as a consultant in dyslexia for teachers and families. Techniques I use to help children in reading are phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, explicit phonics teaching, spelling, multi-sensory reinforcement, controlled reading with decodable text, fluency, vocabulary comprehension, as well as progress monitoring. The techniques I use are similar to Orton methodology without the high price.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

I have had the opportunity to work with students in elementary and middle school to help them acquire study skills. I have helped my students with study skills by showing them how to apply certain strategies and tips. The most important part of study sills is to help students with organization skills as well. During a study skills sessions, I cover note taking, time management, organization, binder skills, learning styles, concentration and memory, test preparation, and test taking tips. A regular routine and assigned time for homework is also essential. One of the first things that I generally do in the first two sessions is to help the student develop a working notebook. The working notebook is the daily notebook your child takes to class. I have found that this strategy helps students get organized and helps with general study skill habits.

ADHD,

ADHD

I have had the pleasure to work with many students whom have ADD and ADHD, as I have served as a teacher and instructor for seven years. In addition, I have a Masters degree in Special Education instruction. Through my training, I have learned to use positive behavior supports for students whom have ADD and/or ADHD. When I work with children whom have ADD/ADHD I use a variety of techniques. 1. Make directions clear and short. Repeat if necessary. 2. Make each task specific; in other words, instead of giving several directions at once, split the directions into smaller steps. 3. Give reminders often, coaxing the child to finish. It is important to complete projects once started to help the child learn to sequence beginning to end. 4. Use interesting materials; hands-on activities, visual and auditory aids. 5. Most of all I am patient, as this is the best strategy for helping a student.

My expectations were high, and they have been exceeded!

Jocelyn has been everything I had hoped for in a tutor and more! She has personalized each tutor session for my son's needs, and based on what he is currently working on at school. My son's grades went up already as well as his confidence in all subjects. Jocelyn is punctual, responsible and very professional. We couldn't be happier. Thank you Jocelyn and an additional thank you to WyzAnt for making this possible.

Very patient and knowledgeable tutor!

Jocelyn has made my son feel very comfortable when she tutors him and they have FUN learning about math, reading etc. I knew she was "the one" tutor because my son immediately hit it off with her and she made him the center of attention. My son is normally shy and reserved, but he was laughing and having fun with her during the session. Also, she has notified of me of some areas that my son needs to focus on more (handwriting, etc), that I wasn't made aware of by his teacher. Overall, we really like Jocelyn and will continue to use her as much as we can!

Wonderful tutor and person

Jocelyn is a very patient, kind and knowledgeable tutor. She has helped my daughter with her subjects at school, using techniques and strategies that help her. My daughter really enjoys their tutoring sessions together. I see more confidence in my daughter and her overall attitude about reading and math has changed. My daughter now enjoys going to school and doesn't feel left out when the other kids are getting the material because she gets it too. Her grades have increased dramatically and we can only see her improving from here on out. Thanks so much Jocelyn!

Great first session!

Our daughter responded right away to Jocelyn - she LOVES her! Right away I see her desiring to do better and having a more positive outlook on her school work.

A Very Effective Tutor!!

First of all let me say, the moment my child met Jocelyn he was received with a warm comfortable feeling around her. My son really enjoys going to tutoring with her. He never complains about having to go. He respects her and takes her seriously. He is improving greatly with his math skills every day and becoming more confident. I have been getting comments from his teacher in school--stating he really is trying harder and is taking a better approach with learning. His attitude towards the "MATH" subject has even changed to the positive! Thanks so much Jocelyn!
