Bio

Hello there!

My name is Wendy. I'm a 43 year old former teacher. I graduated from Southern CT State University with a BA in Elementary Education, and a BS in Sociology. I substitute taught in a variety of classrooms with age groups from Pre-K to 6th as well as special needs classes, before deciding what I wanted to teach. I was certified in Connecticut where I taught second grade, before moving to Texas where I got certified again and taught both kindergarten and first grade.

Hello there!

I substitute taught in a variety of classrooms with age groups from Pre-K to 6th as well as special needs classes, before deciding what I wanted to teach. I was certified in Connecticut where I taught second grade, before moving to Texas where I got certified again and taught both kindergarten and first grade.

A while back, we moved from TX to GA, where I decided to take a break from teaching and work for myself at a home-based business... I loved it, but I missed teaching SO much that when we moved back to CT, I began tutoring and loved it! I'm just tickled to have come across WyzAnt, which provides an easy way for people like me, with a passion for teaching, to connect with people like you, who want or need some one-on-one attention!

I'm back in GA and love working with my students again! I have been a private tutor for about 10 years! I am happy to work with students of any age in my areas of expertise- I once taught reading to a 56 year old! I hope that you will find my teaching style just what you or your child needs!

Feel free to email me with any questions you might have!

~Wendy L.

Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I love teaching math to young children. I believe it is very important to be sure that the foundation is VERY strong before moving on. As I have told my students in the past, "if we build a skyscraper on a foundation made of sand, the higher we build, the more opportunities for it wobble and fall over. We want to make sure our foundation is built strong!" Moving on before previous skills are mastered will make new skills difficult to learn. I also like to work with problem solving beginning as early as kindergarten- problem solving strategies teach critical thinking skills that can be utilized in many areas of life! :)
Phonics,

Phonics

I graduated from Southern CT State University with a BA in Elementary Education, and a BS in Sociology. Many children struggle with different aspects of learning to read. Phonics is one such aspect that can cause problems with reading, speaking, and spelling. Phonics is the basic instruction that teaches the relationships between letters and sounds. It involves learning how to connect the sounds of spoken English with letters or groups of letters that create sounds. Phonics teaches us to use these relationships to speak, read, and write words. There are a variety of skills to tackle when teaching phonics, from individual letter sounds, blends, dipthongs, consonants and vowels, and not to mention, "the rules" and exceptions. It's a lot to learn, but it can also be fun! I truly enjoy these lessons, because phonics give us a good foundation for other learning!
Reading,

Reading

Reading is one of the most important gifts we can give children. Reading affects everything we do from crossing a street safely, ordering at restaurant, to keeping up with current events, communicating with others, and even enjoyment. We read everywhere we go with almost everything we do. Work with phonics, fluency, high frequency words, comprehension, writing, and even confidence are major factors when teaching a reader. There are a variety of skill-sets for developing reading, and I look forward to helping you or your child find success in this very important life skill!

I love teaching students communicate through writing! There are so many ways to express yourself in this medium. When teaching writing, I use the CCP model (Consume/Critique/Produce ). It's a very effective plan that has found my students much success, both in a classroom and one-to-one tutoring! Becoming better writers often creates a better reader as well... who can argue with a reward like that?

Dedicated and enthusiastic tutor

Wendy has been teaching my 1st grade daughter and niece their home school materials the past 2 weeks. She has gone above and beyond the girls' school curriculum and tailored their learning with supplemental materials. She is always energetic and patient with the girls, re-focusing them when needed, juggling their individual learning needs, and is creative in coming up with teaching solutions. She has been incredibly dedicated to their learning, and I can definitely tell that teaching is a passion for her! She is also absolutely wonderful with communicating frequently about how things are going. We look forward to continuing through the semester with her!

Engaging science enrichment tutor

Wendy has taught my young elementary student three beginning science enrichment lessons about observation, living vs. non-living and density. Wendy has made learning fun through nature walks and experiments while incorporating scientific vocabulary and methods. Wendy listened and understood my goals as a parent, assessed my child’s developmental readiness, and has surpassed our expectations.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Wendy has helped my nephew with skills and confidence to read. She has improved his reading skills already even though we have only been taking lessons for 6 weeks. He was acting out more in school to avoid reading but don’t beg much better. She is able to find a way to reach him when he is distracted or dis-obedient. Very happy we selected Wendy.

Awesome lesson! Awesome tutor!

Wendy is an awesome tutor. She turned my daughter's sour mood in regards to learning into a very happy and enjoyable experience! My daughter is growing in confidence every day thanks to Wendy's encouragement, hands on approach, and every day application. She works closely with her teachers to make sure they are on task with the class. We are so glad to have found her!

Very organized, patient tutor with excellent communication.

Wendy has been working with my child now for about 5 weeks and we have definitely noticed a big improvement! We are very impressed with her organization, patience and communication. Throughout my child's education, we have really struggled with teacher communication making it difficult to assist our child at home, but Wendy has made sure that we always know what's going on in the lessons and what we should do at home to assist. She is easy to work with and always there to answer questions. My child really enjoys lesson time with Wendy, which makes it much easier to learn. We feel very fortunate to have found such a great tutor and will definitely continue our lessons going forward and recommend Wendy to anyone needing a tutor.

Makes Learning Fun!

Ms. Wendy tutored my first-grader in all subject areas. She made the learning fun for him, and he actually looked forward to going. She is an experienced classroom teacher and has plenty of resources to vary the lessons and keep them interesting. I'm so thankful we found her!

Challenging but fun

My son has been working with Wendy for about six months now, and we are beyond pleased with his progress and confidence in school. Wendy is extremely patient, and as my son has said she makes work "challenging" but fun at the same time. Wendy is always approachable and easy to talk with, offering her advice and ideas while truly listening to our thoughts and concerns. My son enjoys working with Wendy on a weekly basis. We have truly been impressed by her love for teaching, the overall concern and interest she has in my son, and energy she brings to all of her lessons!

Excellent tutor!

Wendy asked all the right questions in advance of meeting my granddaughter and was prompt and well prepared when she arrived to tutor her in reading and writing. She had a good rapport with my grand child and I felt after the first session that they could develop a good working relationship. I highly recommend Wendy as a tutor!
