Bio

I specialize in differentiating instruction to meet the needs of my students. I enjoy watching learners grow in their command of English in all four domains (reading, writing, listening, and speaking). I believe in self-directed learning that is interactive and fun whether your goal is to improve your reading and writing skills or learn the academic language of a content area (math, science, etc.). You may be asked to videotape yourself speaking and self-critique what you perceive as pronunciation errors. You may write poetry to develop your descriptive language skills. If you need specific help in the language of a content area (math, science, etc.) that will be the focus of the session.

I have 25 years of ESL/ESOL/EFL and literacy teaching experience in the United States, Brazil, and Uzbekistan. In the United States, I have taught both children and adults. My most recent experience has been as a teacher educator in a university setting preparing teachers to teach English learners in K-12 classrooms.

I have a Master's degree in TESOL from American University (Washington DC) and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Florida. I taught English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in Brazil and ESOL for adult learners in the US. In the K-12 classroom setting, I was a grade 3-5 literacy teacher and have prepared teachers to teach English learners in K-12 content classrooms. My teaching experience has been both face-to-face and online.

English Reading and Writing Skills

She is having a very good knowledge and awesome experience. The way she approaches to any concept is excellent. I'm seeing improvement in writing skills after taking classes with Dr. Karen. I always review the videos shared by her for each session, which gives an idea to any parent what topic is discussed and how my son is doing in each session. Thanks a lot Dr. Karen is helping my son to improve the skills in reading and writing.

An Amazing Tutor and Teacher

Dr. K has been an absolutely amazing tutor for our middle schooler. We were looking for language arts/reading coach support over the summer. Dr. K took such exceptional interest in working with our daughter. The time spent in lessons was efficiently used and each session had thoughtful structure. Most importantly, our daughter looked forward to the sessions and completing assignments, which is a testament to Dr. K’s engaging style. We couldn’t be more happy with our experience and would recommend Dr K to any one without hesitation. We look forward to continuing to work with her in the future.

She is the best!

Dr. Karen was absolutely the best!! She possesses excellent communication skills with a teen boy whose primary convern is the sports. Her genuine curiosity of what my son is interested in has made my son feel connected to her from the beginning. I love that she has a keen sense of finding out what he lacks and she made it clear for him to set the expectation of what he will need to do to improve his writing. I can't wait to see how things will change and improve. She won't disappoint anyone at any level.
