About William

My tutoring mission is to empower you or your child to achieve academic, professional, or personal success through growing knowledge, developing writing, reasoning, and study skills, and cultivating an interest--if not passion--for subjects.

My firsthand experience being tutored in middle and high school taught me the difference a dedicated, supportive tutor can make. I begin my tutoring relationship with a discussion about the student's strengths, areas for improvement, and learning style in order to create a customized approach best suited for achieving success. Lessons may include: reviewing assigned material, reviewing/working through homework, preparing for tests, and brainstorming/proofreading papers. Regular feedback is highly encouraged--I want to be sure I'm doing the best I can to help you or your child!

My academic background includes multiple Honors and AP-level courses in high school, a BA and MA in Political Science, multiple political science/honor society awards, and numerous workshops on a variety of skills including public speaking, resume & cover letter writing, and argumentation. I have also worked as an Alumni Engagement Associate at an educational nonprofit focused on teaching high school and college students economics, philosophy, and entrepreneurship.

I specialize in History, Political Science/Govt, Literature/Reading and Writing, Philosophy (including AP and college-level courses), ACT/SAT/GRE test prep, and career development.

With my strong background of academic success and passion for learning and coaching others, I am confident I can help you achieve the results you're seeking. Please reach out if you'd like to schedule a lesson or have any questions. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

Career coaching is a driving passion of mine; the opportunity to learn about someone's strengths, interests, and goals and help them achieve success is an immense source of inspiration and joy for me.

I have participated in numerous career-skills workshops led by professional career coaches and consultants; participated in two formal mentorship programs; and in my most recent position, regularly researched and connected young adults with academic and professional development opportunities.

I am especially knowledgeable in the StrengthsFinder system, having participated in and led several workshops and extensively studied various StrengthsFinder materials. I am also familiar with personality assessments such as MBTI, VIA Character Survey, and the Big Five. As I am pursuing a career in career coaching, I am always researching strategies and resources to help others achieve professional success.

I took AP Microeconomics, and did very well in my Microeconomics and Philosophy of Economics courses in college. Outside of school, I attended numerous college and graduate-level seminars focusing on economics, history of economic thought, and political economy. Most recently, I worked for an educational nonprofit specializing in teaching high school and college students about economics and entrepreneurship. My economics background allows me to teach economics in a relatable, fun way.

I took an all Honors/AP English track while in high school: Honors 9th Grade Lit, Honors American Lit, Honors British Lit, and AP Lit.

I consistently received high grades on my essays during college and graduate school, and have written a variety of texts including my M.A. thesis and (published) news articles and op-eds. During college, I wrote for my school's newspaper and have also published numerous reviewed essays and articles in online news/opinion sites.

European History

In high school, I took AP World History, a good part of which involved learning about European History. In college, I took a series of three courses which focused on European religion and philosophy from the Ancient Greeks up to the mid-20th century, as well as numerous political theory classes which required much study of European philosophers and political thinkers. In these courses, we studied not only the thought itself but the background political, cultural, and technological contexts of the time. Since 2009, I have also attended numerous college and graduate-level seminars which focused on, among other things, European political and economic thought and history from the Enlightenment through the mid-20th century; these seminars also connected the ideas to the broader sociopolitical context.

Government & Politics

I have an extensive and very strong academic background in Government and Politics, and have also worked in various politics-related capacities. I took both AP Govt. and Politics and AP Comparative Politics in high school and earned a 4 on both exams. I earned my B.A. in Political Science, with Honors, and was awarded the department's Political Science Award and became a member of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national Political Science honor society. I went on to earn my M.A. in Political Science from the University of Georgia. Since 2009, I have attended numerous college and graduate-level seminars and conferences on political science, economics, and philosophy. I have worked for a number of politics-related nonprofits, including interning with a public-policy think tank and most recently, at a nonprofit focused on teaching young people about economics and political theory.

I have an excellent background in philosophy (particularly political and social philosophy and ethics) and absolutely love discussing it with others! My qualifications include:

-Numerous college and graduate level courses in political, social, religious, and applied philosophy. I specialized in political theory for both my B.A. and M.A. degrees in Political Science.

-My Master's thesis was an exercise in political theory: it was largely concerned with constructing and applying a method for analyzing the legitimacy of governments.
-Attendance to several college and graduate-level seminars on political, social, and economic philosophy.
-I am an active member of a Philosophy Discussion Meet-Up group in the Metro Atlanta area.

Political Science

Both my B.A. and M.A. are in Political Science; my primary focus is in early modern through contemporary political theory/philosophy, as well as American Politics. My undergraduate thesis consisted of a comparative evaluation of liberalism and communitarianism, and my Master's thesis constructed a rubric for evaluating legitimacy, which I applied to homeowner's associations and traditional governments. While at Rhodes College, I received the school's Mike Cody Award in Political Science and was inducted into Pi Sigma Alpha, the national Political Science honor society. Since 2009, I have attended numerous college/grad level seminars, most of which were organized by the Institute for Humane Studies (IHS--an educational nonprofit focusing on the social sciences, including Political Science); have interned at a state-level public policy think tank; and have worked for various politics-related nonprofits, including IHS and a government-transparency organization.

Public Speaking

I have developed strong public speaking skills through my two degrees in Political Science and career. The former helped me develop the ability to persuasively yet respectful debate with others, as well as to cogently present and defend research. My professional experience includes numerous public speaking workshops as well as frequent project proposals and reports and sales/outreach presentations and conversations at conferences and debate/FBLA tournaments. While I specialize in persuasive and business-oriented speaking, I am familiar enough with the basic principles and strategies to help with any public speaking training needs.

Social Studies

My academic and professional experience has revolved around social studies-related fields. In high school, I took several AP-level social studies courses including AP World History, AP Microeconomics, and AP Government; I earned a BA and MA in Political Science, and have attended numerous multi-day seminars and conferences focused on political science, economics, and philosophy. Finally, I recently worked at a nonprofit dedicated to teaching young people about economics, entrepreneurship, and political philosophy.

Study Skills

In high school, I took--and consistently achieved high grades in several AP and Honors classes. I have a BA and MA in Political Science, which required frequent research and repeated textual study. My previous tutoring experience included designing studying strategies for a senior taking AP Language. My approach to tutoring study skills is based on determining my client's preferred learning style and any sources of difficulty for achieving command of the subject, then designing practice exercises based on this information. Exercises might include sample questions, short quizzes, and asking the student to explain a concept back to me.

World History

I have taken numerous courses in the humanities broadly speaking, and certainly relating to World History. In high school, I took AP World History and earned a 5 (the highest possible score) on the test, and in college I took a three-semester humanities track which studied (mainly European and Middle Eastern) religion, art, culture, philosophy, politics, and history from Biblical times up through modern day. I also took numerous other college and graduate courses which addressed the history of philosophy, politics, economics, religion, and social trends.

In addition to my academic studies in history, I am an avid reader of history books and have attended numerous college and graduate-level seminars addressing the history of political, philosophical, and economic thought.

I have exceptionally strong writing skills and experience. Throughout K-12, I consistently earned high grades in writing-heavy subjects, such as English and Social Studies. In college and graduate school, I majored in Political Science, which required writing numerous descriptive and persuasive essays, including a Master's thesis. In addition to my academic writing, I wrote for my college's newspaper and have experience writing marketing copy. Writing is a major passion of mine, and I greatly enjoying helping others improve their writing skills.
