Common Core,

Common Core

Parents, learn powerful tips and tricks for teaching reading and spelling at my weekly literacy webinar – just $30/attendee! I specialize in early elementary literacy, leveraging comprehensive phonics to provide a solid foundation for reading and spelling. The approach I use promotes critical thinking skills that are applicable to other subjects, as well. I am the co-author of a guide to teaching reading and spelling, with expertise focused around Common Core standards. I've taught students enrolled in schools using Common Core across the metro area.

----- LITERACY SKILLS AND CRITICAL THINKING ----- There are 30-40 simple spelling rules and 74 phonograms that explain 98% of English words. The approach I use to teach reading and spelling encourages students to apply critical thinking skills to decoding and spelling words. ----- BECOME A LITERACY SUPERHERO ----- Join me for a crash course on teaching children to read and spell. My weekly literacy webinar for parents is just $30/attendee for an hour loaded with tips and tricks for overcoming the most challenging elements. You’ll learn simple, yet powerful rules that unlock the logic in our language. ----- EXPERIENCED TUTOR ----- I have previous experience as an elementary tutor with Omozase, a literacy intervention program for struggling readers. Through one on one tutoring, 80% of Omozase's regular attendees met or exceeded benchmarks. Later, I co-authored a book designed to help parents teach children to sound out the sight words through phonics. I also have experience teaching mathematics, civics, and financial literacy as a volunteer with Junior Achievement.
Homeschool,

Homeschool

I offer instruction in language arts for parents who are homeschooling. The approach I use is similar to Orton-Gillingham and provides a solid foundation for reading and spelling. I have taught weekly supplemental homeschooling classes for the past two school years.
Phonics,

Phonics

I am the co-author of a systematic guide to teaching phonics that methodically provides a child with all the tools necessary to decode a word prior to asking the child to read it. Bit by bit, the child learns to decode not just the sight words, but hundreds of other words common in children’s literature that require the same skills. This approach not only reduces frustration, but also teaches the child to apply critical thinking skills to the deliciously robust and surprisingly logical code of English. Image if you could see words through the eyes of an emerging reader. The words that use only the primary sound for each letter would make sense, like “cat” and “dog.” But other words, even short ones, like “is” and “his” might not quite make sense to an observant, rule-following child, not to mention more challenging words like “was” and “have,” and dozens of other words an emerging reader encounters. As literate adults, it can be hard to see words as a child does. Perhaps we can understand a child’s frustration that “have” doesn’t rhyme with “gave,” but many of us were never taught why, making it difficult to assist the child in this case and many others. Of the 315 words commonly referred to as Dolch sight words, 18% require knowledge of just the primary sound of each letter, or 26 bits of information. Another 5% of sight words can be classified as exceptions. That leaves the remaining 76% of the sight words as phonetically regular. They just require additional instruction beyond the primary sound of each letter. To decode these remaining 240 sight words, a child needs 66 bits of additional information, many of which are no more complicated than 26 sounds already learned. And once the child has the skills necessary to decode the sight words, the child will have over half the tools needed to decode 98% of the roughly 2 million words in the English lexicon. The approach I use is derived from Orton Gillingham, a multi-sensory approach to comprehensive phonics proven to help struggling readers. Once a child learns to read, the content continues to provide a solid foundation for spelling. I would be delighted to help you teach your child to read. Please contact me and share your preferred times to meet. Let’s get started today!

Parents, join me for a crash course on teaching children to read and spell. You’ll learn to teach the simple, yet powerful rules that unlock the logic in our language. ----- SAMPLE CONTENT ----- Learn to teach the simple rules that explain the following: - Why C says /k/ in CALL but /s/ in CELL. - Why HAVE does not rhyme with GAVE. - Why O says three different sounds in COVE, LOVE, and MOVE. - Why the E is dropped in CHARGE + ING = CHARGING but retained in CHARGE + ABLE = CHARGEABLE. - The most common way vowels get permission to say their names (long sounds) - and it's not silent final E. - Why there is a silent E after short vowels in words like APPLE and DANCE. - Spelling implications for the four letters that cannot be used at the end of English words. ----- SIMPLE, LOGICAL RULES ----- I am the co-author of a book on phonics designed to provide children with an introduction to some of the 30-40 spelling rules and 74 phonograms that explain 98% of English words. ----- SOLID FOUNDATION ----- Some children who are adept at simply memorizing words in the early years begin to struggle in later elementary as vocabulary demands increase. However, a student with a solid foundation in phonics is well prepared to handle such vocabulary growth. The student will also get practice applying critical thinking skills for decoding words and spelling. ----- EXPERIENCED TUTOR ----- As a long-time literacy volunteer, tutor, and author, I can provide streamlined lessons tailored to your child's specific needs.

Study Skills

Whether you’re challenged by comprehension, recall, or time management, an investment in study skills streamlines your pursuits across all subjects throughout your academic career and or personal life. With customized lessons tailored to your individual needs, study skill lessons can include: - Lifestyle hacks derived from neuroscience to improve cognitive function. - Optimally spaced study sessions to combat memory decay with maximum efficiency. - A research-backed notetaking style that doubles as a practice test. - Techniques to support executive functions like planning and task initiation. We’ll use a variety of scientifically researched and time-tested strategies to leverage your dominant learning style and strengths while supplementing with new skills for a multisensory learning experience. Some of the techniques we’ll cover are ones I applied in grad school when I earned two master’s degrees while working full-time and climbing the corporate ladder, and/or in undergrad where I graduated top in my class, and even as a high school student taking multiple AP classes while juggling a long list of extra-curricular activities. Others are ones I only wish I had back then, and use now as a life-long learner. Please contact me today to start working smarter tomorrow!

Special Needs

Dyslexia,

Dyslexia

I am the co-author of a book on teaching the Dolch sight words through phonics. The content I teach is derived from the Orton Gillingham approach, which is highly recommended for students with dyslexia. The content is delivered in a multi-sensory format that respects your child’s dominant learning style, whether kinesthetic, auditory, or visual. Children who struggle under traditional reading instruction have shown great gains with instruction that respects their learning style. Logical, literal learners may be frustrated by well-intentioned but incomplete instruction, internalizing great doubt when attempts to apply only partially-accurate guidance results in errors. Fortunately, English is remarkably regular when seen through the eyes of a reader who has been taught comprehensive phonics. Contrary to popular belief, 93% of sight words are phonetically regular. A child who has learned the phonetic rules necessary to decode the sight words will know half of the concepts needed to decode 98% of all English words. That is a huge achievement for an emerging reader and one that provides the student with confidence in themselves and our language. Your child will be able to see English as a deliciously rich and robust code instead of a confusing jumble of exceptions. More advanced readers can also benefit from comprehensive phonics instruction, particularly as a foundation for applying critical thinking skills to spelling. As an experienced literacy tutor and trainer, I’ve carefully constructed each lesson and seminar with support multiple learning modalities to ensure retention. Please contact me today to get started.
Phonics,

Very knowledgeable

Cindy unraveled a months long problem which consisted of missing folders, duplicate images, etc. I wish that I would have found her months ago. As a side note: she was very understanding, and didn't make me feel like an idiot for creating such havoc!

Talented coach who takes the fear out of learning

Cindy is helping me gain confidence that I can master aspects of photography that have been “black holes” for me. She guides me to what I need to learn, visualizes things I have never understood and shows me how to practice on my own. All this is done with deep listening and adjusting on the spot to my needs. She is incredibly open, sincere and approachable. I feel very lucky to have found her.

Amazingly knowledgeable and helpful tutor

Cindy helped me trouble shoot numerous problems I was having within the Lightroom program. Every question was answered in a timely manner with ease. She is very organized, extremely knowledgeable and an absolute pleasure to work with. I am not very computer literate. This was my first experience using a remote tutor and Cindy made the experience easy. If you need a tutor I highly recommend calling Cindy.
