About Cindy

------- PATIENT, EMPATHETIC STYLE -------

Students have told me they appreciate the way I simplify complex topics. As a professional instructor, it is my obligation to ensure that key fundamentals are covered, but as a private tutor, it is my great pleasure to present the material in such a way that it is immediately applicable to your needs and interests.

------- CUSTOMER DELIGHT GUARANTEE -------

I am passionate about delighting my clients. Prior to becoming an instructor, I had a nearly 20 year career leading customer loyalty and retention efforts at a Fortune 20 company, and I bring that same customer focus to my teaching.

If you should ever feel that a session isn't worthy of a 5-star rating and a glowing review, I will cancel the lesson with no charges. I've never needed to do that, but I want you to feel comfortable entrusting your time and money with me.

Please click on the Student Feedback tab to see feedback from fellow WyzAnt users.

------- GETTING STARTED -------

If you're new to online tutoring, I'll help you get your computer configured before we start the first lesson. Many students find online tutoring ideal, eliminating commute time and enabling tutoring at more convenient hours.

I also offer in-person sessions at the following libraries in north metro Atlanta:
- ALPHARETTA, ROSWELL, MILTON: Alpharetta Library at 10 Park Plaza, Alpharetta, GA 30009.
- JOHNS CREEK, DULUTH, SUWANEE: Dr. Robert E. Fulton Library At Ocee at 5090 Abbotts Bridge Rd, Alpharetta, GA 30005.

Please let me know what questions you might have for me, or if you're ready to get started, please share dates and times that work best for you.

It would be a great honor to work with you to achieve your goals. I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Photoshop

While Lightroom can handle most post processing needs, certain tasks require (or can be done more easily) in Photoshop. I can help you determine when to leverage Photoshop in your workflow and how to navigate the interface.

I use Photoshop professionally for complex, multi-layer architectural composites. I'm an Adobe Certified Expert (ACE) in Abode Photoshop Lightroom and an Adobe Education Trainer (AET).

Common Core

Parents, learn powerful tips and tricks for teaching reading and spelling at my weekly literacy webinar – just $30/attendee! I specialize in early elementary literacy, leveraging comprehensive phonics to provide a solid foundation for reading and spelling. The approach I use promotes critical thinking skills that are applicable to other subjects, as well. I am the co-author of a guide to teaching reading and spelling, with expertise focused around Common Core standards. I've taught students enrolled in schools using Common Core across the metro area.

Homeschool

I offer instruction in language arts for parents who are homeschooling. The approach I use is similar to Orton-Gillingham and provides a solid foundation for reading and spelling. I have taught weekly supplemental homeschooling classes for the past two school years.

Marketing

During my 20 year career in marketing with a Fortune 50 employer, I've lead teams in acquisition, product management, and retention for both consumer and B2B marketing. I enjoy guiding colleagues in applying an analytical approach to marketing strategy and tactics, leveraging insights from the intersection of data science, behavioral modeling, finance, and market research.

Microsoft Excel

I've used Excel extensively throughout my career for forecasting, budgets, financial analysis, projections, etc, including robust pivot tables and pivot charts. I enjoy helping colleagues leverage Excel to perform tasks efficiently.

Phonics

Parents, join me for a crash course on teaching children to read and spell. Save big with group rates for my weekly literacy webinar – just $30/attendee for an hour loaded with tips and tricks for overcoming the most challenging elements. You’ll learn simple, yet powerful rules that unlock the logic in our language. I am the co-author of a book on teaching the Dolch sight words through phonics. Contrary to popular belief, 93% of sight words are phonetically regular. And, a child who has learned the phonetic rules necessary to decode the sight words will know half of the concepts needed to decode 98% of all English words. That is a huge achievement for an emerging reader and one that provides the student with confidence in themselves and our language. Your child will be able to see English as a deliciously rich and robust code instead of a confusing jumble of exceptions. More advanced readers can also benefit from comprehensive phonics instruction, particularly as a foundation for applying critical thinking skills to spelling. As an experienced literacy tutor and trainer, I’ve carefully constructed each lesson and seminar with support multiple learning modalities to ensure retention. Please contact me today to get started.

Photography

Photography is a passion of mine and I love helping others understand the art and science in photography. I continually invest in training from leading photographers in diverse genres. I am a member of the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) and KelbyOne (formerly the National Association of Photoshop Professionals), and am a mentee of one of the most well-known photography instructors. I've also had coursework in History of Design and History of Art at the College of Architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology. I've earned a certified professional photographer designation from Real Estate Photographers of America and International (REPAI), recognized as the most trusted source for qualified real estate photographers throughout the world. I have also won awards for portrait and landscape photography, and would be delighted to help you create beautiful images.

----- SAMPLE CONTENT -----

Learn to teach the simple rules that explain the following:

- Why GAVE rhymes with DAVE but not HAVE.
- Why C says /k/ in CALL but /s/ in CELL.
- Why O says three different sounds in COVE, LOVE, and MOVE.
- Why the E is dropped in CHARGE + ING = CHARGING but retained in CHARGE + ABLE = CHARGEABLE.
- The most common way vowels get permission to says their names (long sounds) - and it's not silent final E.
- Why there is a silent E after short vowels in words like APPLE and DANCE.
- Spelling solutions for the four letters that cannot be used at the end of English words.

----- SIMPLE, LOGICAL RULES ----- I am the co-author of a book on phonics designed to provide children with an introduction to some of the 30-40 spelling rules and 74 phonograms that explain 98% of English words.

----- SOLID FOUNDATION ----- Some children who are adept at simply memorizing words in the early years begin to struggle in later elementary as vocabulary demands increase. However, a student with a solid foundation in phonics is well prepared to handle such vocabulary growth.

----- CRITICAL THINKING ----- The student will also get practice applying critical thinking skills for decoding words and spelling.

----- EXPERIENCED TUTOR ----- As a long-time literacy volunteer, tutor, and author, I can provide streamlined lessons tailored to your child's specific needs.

Spelling

----- SIMPLE, LOGICAL SPELLING RULES -----
I am the co-author of a book on phonics designed to provide children with an introduction to some of the 30-40 spelling rules and 74 phonograms that explain 98% of English words.

----- SPELLING STRATEGIES -----
In addition to those rules and phonograms, tutoring sessions include strategies for spelling the schwa sound, which is particularly tricky given that it is the most common vowel sound and can be made by every vowel.

----- CRITICAL THINKING -----
The student will also get practice applying critical thinking skills to spelling.

----- EXPERIENCE -----
I have served as a literacy volunteer at a local elementary school, and working with those students strengthened my passion for teaching our language.
