About Cindy

------- PATIENT, EMPATHETIC STYLE -------

Students have told me they appreciate the way I simplify complex topics. As a professional instructor, it is my obligation to ensure that key fundamentals are covered, but as a private tutor, it is my great pleasure to present the material in such a way that it is immediately applicable to your needs and interests.

------- CUSTOMER DELIGHT GUARANTEE -------

I am passionate about delighting my clients. Prior to becoming an instructor, I had a nearly 20 year career leading customer loyalty and retention efforts at a Fortune 20 company, and I bring that same customer focus to my teaching.

If you should ever feel that a session isn't worthy of a 5-star rating and a glowing review, I will cancel the lesson with no charges. I've never needed to do that, but I want you to feel comfortable entrusting your time and money with me.

Please click on the Student Feedback tab to see feedback from fellow WyzAnt users.

------- GETTING STARTED -------

If you're new to online tutoring, I'll help you get your computer configured before we start the first lesson. Many students find online tutoring ideal, eliminating commute time and enabling tutoring at more convenient hours.

I also offer in-person sessions at the following libraries in north metro Atlanta:
- ALPHARETTA, ROSWELL, MILTON: Alpharetta Library at 10 Park Plaza, Alpharetta, GA 30009.
- JOHNS CREEK, DULUTH, SUWANEE: Dr. Robert E. Fulton Library At Ocee at 5090 Abbotts Bridge Rd, Alpharetta, GA 30005.

Please let me know what questions you might have for me, or if you're ready to get started, please share dates and times that work best for you.

It would be a great honor to work with you to achieve your goals. I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Lightroom

I am an Adobe Certified Expert in Abode Photoshop Lightroom and one of fewer than 60 current certified experts nationwide. An Adobe Certified Expert has demonstrated competence across the full range of Lightroom's functionality and is positioned to help a student build a workflow that is customized to the unique needs of their specialty, equipment, and personal preferences.

I've taught Lightroom to students of all ages, from middle schoolers to retirees, including many who are new to online lessons. Students have told me they appreciate the way I simplify complex topics and keep lessons fun and efficient. Please see the Student Feedback tab for 5-star reviews from prior Lightroom students.

Many students have found it helpful to start Lightroom training with a detailed discussion of the import and export processes, as well as to learn what is and isn't in the catalog, how to back it up, etc. Lessons include guidance on principles of composition and how they can be addressed in post processing to bring out the best in an image. The Develop module has a few hidden gems I'd like share, and if you are interested in photo books and slideshows, we can also cover those modules. The print module offers functions that are useful even for those who do not print images at home. If you are a Creative Cloud subscriber, there are a host of mobile apps to cover, as well as tools for sharing images.

Please let me know what you would like to learn about Lightroom. With online tutoring, your lesson could be underway today.

Adobe Photoshop

While Lightroom can handle most post processing needs, certain tasks require (or can be done more easily) in Photoshop. I can help you determine when to leverage Photoshop in your workflow and how to navigate the interface.

I use Photoshop professionally for complex, multi-layer architectural composites, and am an Adobe Certified Expert (ACE) in Abode Photoshop Lightroom.

Common Core

I specialize in early elementary literacy, leveraging comprehensive phonics to provide a solid foundation for reading and spelling. The approach I use promotes critical thinking skills that are applicable to other subjects, as well. I am the co-author of a guide to teaching reading and spelling, with expertise focused around Common Core standards CCSS.ELA.LITERACY.RY.K.2, 1.2, 1.3, 2.3, and 3.3. I've taught students enrolled in schools using Common Core across the metro area.

Elementary (K-6th)

----- COMPREHENSIVE LITERACY SKILLS -----
Give your child a solid foundation for academic success with powerful rules that unlock our language. There are 30-40 simple spelling rules and 74 phonograms that explain 98% of English words. It would be my great pleasure to share them with you and your child.

----- CRITICAL THINKING -----
The approach I use to teach reading and spelling encourages students to apply critical thinking skills to decoding and spelling words.

----- MINI COURSE FOR PARENTS -----
After each lesson, I provide the parent with a debrief of the concepts covered. The parent is then positioned to reinforce the lesson as the child encounters questions throughout their school years. In fact, for an expedited approach, I can even teach the parent directly in a train-the-trainer style. Literate adults digest these concepts quickly during our sessions. The parent can then relay these concepts to the child as needed or via simple, structured lesson handouts I can provide. This approach is ideal for students who are too far away to meet in person and too young for online lessons.

----- EXPERIENCED TUTOR -----
I have previous experience as an elementary tutor with Omozase, a literacy intervention program for struggling readers. Through one on one tutoring, 80% of Omozase's regular attendees met or exceeded benchmarks. Later, I co-authored a book designed to help parents teach children to sound out the sight words through phonics. I also have experience teaching mathematics, civics, and financial literacy as a volunteer with Junior Achievement.

Homeschool

I offer instruction in language arts for parents who are homeschooling. The approach I use is similar to Orton-Gillingham and provides a solid foundation for reading and spelling. I have taught weekly supplemental homeschooling classes for the past two school years.

Microsoft Excel

I've used Excel extensively throughout my career for forecasting, budgets, financial analysis, projections, etc, including robust pivot tables and pivot charts. I enjoy helping colleagues leverage Excel to perform tasks efficiently.

Phonics

----- FOUNDATION FOR SUCCESS -----
If your child is preparing to learn sight words, I will introduce the phonetic rules necessary for them to decode words without rote memorization. Contrary to popular belief, 93% of sight words are phonetically regular. And, a child who has learned the phonetic rules necessary to decode the sight words will know half of the concepts needed to decode 98% of all English words. That is a huge achievement for an emerging reader and one that provides the student with confidence in themselves and our language. Your child will be able to see English as a deliciously rich and robust code instead of a confusing jumble of exceptions.

----- SPELLING RULES -----
More advanced readers can also benefit from comprehensive phonics instruction, particularly as a foundation for applying critical thinking skills to spelling.

----- EXPERIENCED TUTOR -----
I am the co-author of a guide to teaching the Dolch sight words through phonics. I have served as a literacy volunteer at a local elementary school, and working with those students strengthened my passion for teaching our language.

Photography

Photography is a passion of mine and I love helping others understand the art and science in photography. I continually invest in training from leading photographers in diverse genres. I am a member of the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) and KelbyOne (formerly the National Association of Photoshop Professionals), and am a mentee of one of the most well-known photography instructors. I've also had coursework in History of Design and History of Art at the College of Architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology. I've earned a certified professional photographer designation from Real Estate Photographers of America and International (REPAI), recognized as the most trusted source for qualified real estate photographers throughout the world. I have also won awards for portrait and landscape photography, and would be delighted to help you create beautiful images.

Reading

----- SIMPLE, LOGICAL RULES -----
I am the co-author of a book on phonics designed to provide children with an introduction to some of the 30-40 spelling rules and 74 phonograms that explain 98% of English words.

----- SOLID FOUNDATION -----
Some children who are adept at simply memorizing words in the early years begin to struggle in later elementary as vocabulary demands increase. However, a student with a solid foundation in phonics is well prepared to handle such vocabulary growth.

----- CRITICAL THINKING -----
The student will also get practice applying critical thinking skills for decoding words and spelling.

----- EXPERIENCED TUTOR -----
As a long-time literacy volunteer, tutor, and author, I can provide streamlined lessons tailored to your child's specific needs.

Spelling

----- SIMPLE, LOGICAL SPELLING RULES -----
I am the co-author of a book on phonics designed to provide children with an introduction to some of the 30-40 spelling rules and 74 phonograms that explain 98% of English words.

----- SPELLING STRATEGIES -----
In addition to those rules and phonograms, tutoring sessions include strategies for spelling the schwa sound, which is particularly tricky given that it is the most common vowel sound and can be made by every vowel.

----- CRITICAL THINKING -----
The student will also get practice applying critical thinking skills to spelling.

----- EXPERIENCE -----
I have served as a literacy volunteer at a local elementary school, and working with those students strengthened my passion for teaching our language.
