Bio

When I was 8-years-old my dad taught me chess. Although I was fascinated by the game, I didn't take it seriously until the Summer of 2015 when I joined a local chess club in Cape Coral, FL and began to compete in tournaments throughout Florida. A few years later, in January of 2020, I finished 3rd in the master's section of the 6th Annual Gulf Coast New Year's Open in Ft. Myers, FL. With this result my classical rating rose to 2050 and I officially became a chess expert! Since then, I've gone...

With this result my classical rating rose to 2050 and I officially became a chess expert! Since then, I've gone on to become a Candidates Master and my peak rating has been as high as 2089.
Nowadays I balance my time as a player and a coach. I work with more than a dozen students both online and in-person. I also work with several schools and senior living facilities throughout Greater Orlando.
My mission is to share the joy of chess with as many people as possible. My approach to coaching is personal and structured. I attentively work with my students to figure out their strengths and weaknesses and from there teach them how to think with discipline and creativity! Furthermore, I assure that no stone is left unturned, which means every phase of the game is covered including, but not limited to the opening, middlegame, endgame, tactics, psychology and time management. This comprehensive approach is important for the player who wants to win!

Ultimately, I know what it's like to want to improve and I know I can help you do that based on my knowledge, experience and passion for the ancient game. Chess

I have been competing in chess tournaments for the last 6 years and have been playing the beautiful game since I was 8. In 2019 I competed in the World Open in Philadelphia in the U-2200 section. I currently have a USCF (United States Chess Federation) rating of over 2000, which makes me an expert! I would love to teach chess to anyone willing to learn. I'm patient and will work with you regardless of whether you're a beginner, a seasoned player looking to fine-tune, or somewhere in between.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I earned a B.A. in English Literature from Southeastern University (2008-2012). After a year travelling the country and working as a caregiver at various assisted living facilities, I taught 10th English at Clewiston High School. Every individual is endowed with certain talents. I believe one of mine is the ability to work patiently, whether its writing, reading, grammar, literature, or public speaking, with an individual irregardless of their strength. In my opinion, this method is what works best. In my life, I've seen the best results when I break down what I'm studying, since it's the pieces which comprise the whole.

Excellent Chess Instructor

I contacted Phillip for an in person lesson for my 4 year old. I didn’t know how much my son could learn in an hour, he has never played or even seen chess before. I was truly astonished how by the end of the hour he was able to set up the board and move pieces in their intended directions and name the pieces. He stayed focused the entire hour as well which showed how much he loved the game! Phillip made it fun for him and it showed, my son said has already asked when he can play again!

Great Job!

Phillip is very knowledgeable and does a great job teaching my 9yo son. He listens and adapts his lessons to fit my son's needs. We are very pleased and hope to enter our son in some tournaments this summer.

Phillip was great!

Phillip is fantastic with my 6 year old daughter and is able to keep her engaged and interested for her whole chess lesson. She looks forward to it every week now and has been getting much better in only a couple lessons! I would highly recommend him as a tutor to anyone.

A Great Chess Tutor!

He was a good chess tutor for my son, he told my son moves he should do instead of the other moves he used to make. He also taught my son what pieces he should move or trade for a better place for another piece.

Knowledgeable and helpful

My first lesson Phillip helped me see lines I did not originally see. I learned what a "bad bishop" is. And that developing your pieces early helps a lot. Then we went over some of my previous games to see where I went wrong and what I could do to improve.

Very knowledgeable and provided real challenges.

We studied several different board positions and looked at them from the perspective of pawn weaknesses, strong moves and basic foundational material. We closed with a review of a game by Alekhine. I was very satisfied by the amount of material we covered.

Came prepared to help

Phillip came with materials ready to review. He listened to my feedback. I gained a new perspective from the lesson. Wyzant requires a minimum of 160 characters for a review to be valid. Found my chess coach

Phillip came prepared, challenged me to think critically and was very knowledgeable. All the things you want in a teacher. Oh and I enjoyed how Phillip already has me looking toward an over the board tournament.

Great Writing skill tutor

I feel confident the work Phillip is doing with my son will improve his work and effort in his writing...MORE than that, my son was overjoyed after the first session to work with Phillip. WHAT a bonus!
