Hi, I'm Lori! I grew up in a rural farming community in Yakima, WA, amid acres of apple and pear orchards. I have been teaching native English speakers as well as ESL students for over twenty years. I hold a Master of Arts in Mass Communications in the specialized field of Public Interest Communications from the University of Florida. Hi, I'm Lori! I grew up in a rural farming community in Yakima, WA, amid acres of apple and pear orchards. I have been teaching native English speakers as well as ESL students for over twenty years. I hold a Master of Arts in Mass Communications in the specialized field of Public Interest Communications from the University of Florida. I also have a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary English and Health Education from Eastern Washington University. Common threads throughout my career have been instructing and presenting to large and small groups as well as tutoring individuals.

I believe teaching should be engaging, dynamic, and enjoyable so students stay motivated. My favorite part of teaching English is the process of writing, especially storytelling. I love exploring ways to revise and edit! I also have seen how the power of storytelling can create a rapport between students and teachers, inspiring student progress. I aim for all my students to be confident about their writing skills.

I have been working as a professional Pilates Instructor/Personal Trainer in the fitness industry since 2007. Since 2012, I’ve been a self-employed Pilates Instructor and have been successfully running my business as a solo entrepreneur. Over the course of my career, I have taught group cardio and weight training classes as well as private sessions. I have also long been a student of yoga and have incorporated its poses in my Pilates practice. However, my primary focus has always been Pilates in which I have taught group mat, ball, and foam rolling Pilates classes and workshops. I have also taught buddy Reformer sessions. My specialty is private one-on-one Reformer Pilates.

I graduated from EWU in 1990 with a BA in Education with English as my major and health as my minor; both of these subjects were endorsed for grades 4-12. I also taught students English as part of my studies. I have been employed by Score (small group tutoring), No Child Left Behind (individual tutoring), Teachers on Reserve (substitute teaching), and Club Z (individual tutoring). For all of these jobs and positions, I have taught grammar and helped students improve their grades and their understanding of grammar.

Besides having my teaching degree, I was required to help students with their study skills. The areas entailed organization, time management, learning how to focus, learning how to prioritize workload, learning how to retain information, learning how to utilize information learned, and how to take multiple choice tests with success (the process of elimination).
Writing

Writing

The main focus of my English major was literature comprehension and writing proficiency. I have taught writing proficiency, and helped students find a love for reading and writing. No matter what subject I am teaching, I utilize writing in a way that the student is excited about learning. I take pride in helping students get over their fear of writing. It is a skill that they will need for the rest of their lives, so when I tutor a student, implementing writing in his or her lesson plan is a given.

Lori was wonderfully engaging with my daughter and connected with her in a patient and kind manner. She was professional, knowledgeable and extremely helpful! She was able to assist my daughter reviewing the material with her and using thought provoking questions to ensure my daughter “owned” her answers!
