Hi, I'm Linnea! I have a Bachelors of Science in Public Health and a Masters of Public Health with a concentration in Epidemiology. Through out my high school, college, and graduate school career, I have taken a variety of classes and found that the more interactive courses tended to be most memorable. I appreciated when professors would include activities in the middle or at the end of lessons to ensure that the students were learning the information. By the end, I felt that I had a better understanding of the material than in the courses I spent taking notes. This has shaped my tutoring approach as I include learning checks, like multi-choice or true and false questions, within the lesson. This helps both ensure students are engaged and learning the material. Of course, this is more of a general idea and can be alter to suit a student's learning style. I believe it is important for a tutoring lesson to be adaptable to help students retain the material.
I have a bit of tutoring experience from high school as I worked in a writing center as part of the English Honor Society. Students would come in and I proofread and highlight areas where their paper could be stronger. In college, I was part of a cancer advocacy program to educate the college community on cancer risk factors. We would have monthly tabling with poster boards covered in information and sometimes educational games. However, my main teaching experience is helping fellow students in anatomy and physiology classes with material they were unsure about.
Ultimately, my goal to ensure that students feel confident in their knowledge of the subject. I know how it feels to go into an exam feeling uncertain and unprepared. That can not only affect a student's mood but also their academic performance. By ensuring that lessons are engaging and well suited to their learning style, we can make sure that the knowledge they receive is knowledge they retain.
