Hello! My name is Matthew, and I'm currently a 4th year medical school student excited about tutoring! I graduated from Vassar College with Bachelor’s degrees in Biochemistry and Chinese, receiving General and Biochemistry Department Honors upon graduation. One of the most lasting lessons I learned in college was from my Intro Chemistry professor who encouraged me to not get bogged down in memorization. With thorough understanding and reasoning, she explained, what first appears as incomprehensible nonsense can be clarified into straightforward calculations. She continued on, explaining that the concepts and equations can “stick” in the long-term with repetition and practice. Yes–there will always be things that need to be memorized. But this approach makes herculean topics much more manageable.

My tutoring approach incorporates this–I believe the foundation is in learning the basics that will help all the other pieces fall into place. With new students, I like to find out what their specific learning style is and what they enjoy learning in order to optimize our time spent together. Depending on the student’s own preferences, I like to incorporate curiosity and creativity to make the material more accessible.

My past tutoring experience includes preparing a high school student for his New York State Regents exam. Topics we reviewed together included pre-calculus and statistics. I am equally comfortable with helping students review material to solidify their understanding as I am with educating on a new topic.

In my free time, I like to explore the city of DC with my dog, Stark, or play indoors with my cat, Whiskey. I am happy to provide a free consultation to see if I might be a good fit. Please reach out to let me know if you have any questions!

Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Honors Algebra 2 was one of my favorite classes in high school—I ended up with an A in the class and went on to score 5/5 on the AP Calculus BC exam. I have tutored multiple students before in the algebra 2/precalculus realm and love to help students reach their personalized goals.
Biology

Biology

I graduated with general and departmental honors in biochemistry in college, which included developing proficiency in general biology topics and cell biology/biochemistry topics specifically. I am currently in my fourth year of medical school where I continue to incorporate principles of biology in daily practice.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I first developed my love for Chemistry in high school with AP Chemistry. I loved imagining the 3D movements of the molecules and how they interacted, and it played a large role in me wanting to pursue biochemistry in college. I graduated with both general and biochemistry department honors. I have prepared and presented myriad concepts in the field to people with varying experience with chemistry. I'm passionate about strengthening skills, clarifying confusions, and boosting confidence.
MCAT

MCAT

In January 2019 I scored a 513 on the MCAT (89th percentile, 128/130/128/127) with a CARS score of 130 (98th percentile) on self-studying alone. I was admitted to my top choice medical school and have successfully completed the first two USMLE Step exams (taking Step 3 next year). My tutoring style incorporates leveraging the information you do know and picking up the highest yield information to maximize your score. If you have any questions or want to learn more, please reach out!
Precalculus

Precalculus

Calculus and pre-calculus were two of my favorite courses in high school. I got A’s in my courses and scored 5/5 on the AP Calculus BC exam in my senior year. I have kept up with my precalculus skills through tutoring where I have gotten to see my students improve both their understanding and test scores.

Matthew was absolutely amazing. Matthew helped my son study for an upcoming test, and was praised by my son for being really good. I tested my son after, and was amazed that he had it all down. Highly recommended and will definitely be using Matthew again for various subjects.
