About James

I am interested in finding a few students who would like to study Latin, Greek or Classical Arabic with me in Georgetown. I am a graduate of Cambridge University in England where I studied Classics and Middle Eastern Languages and have been teaching both Latin and Arabic very successfully for several years on a part time basis. I am also a lawyer (graduate of Harvard Law School) but no longer practice full-time. I like motivated students, whether or not studying for an exam, who are interested in working hard to master difficult languages and to read ancient literature in the original. Very flexible. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Arabic

I studied Arabic at Cambridge University in England for two years and also in Jerusalem at the Hebrew University for summer. I was the top student in my year. I have taught Arabic in a school setting and am currently working on a new verse translation of the 10th century Arabic poet Al-Mutanabbi.

Greek

I studied Classics (Latin and Greek) at Cambridge University in England for two years and was one of the top students in my year. I have maintained my interest in Greek over many years and have read a large amount of classical Greek literature in the original (the whole of Homer, most of Greek Tragedy, Thucydides, Plato, the New Testament etc). I just scored 100 percent on the Latin test. My Greek is equally good! I am also a lawyer (Harvard Law School 1990, magna cum laude) and have had a distinguished career as an attorney.

Latin

I am a Classics graduate of Cambridge University in England and have been an enthusiastic Latinist for most of my life. I have taught Latin at High School level for several years and am currently tutoring two WyzAnt students at different levels. I emphasize grammar and syntax, but I particularly enjoy teaching those just starting to read "real" Latin and who are able to engage Caesar, Cicero and the Roman poets.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

James is very patient especially working with younger children. He was well prepared with even the same text book that my child has been using. His love for the classic language will certainly inspire and motivate my child to achieve more his potential in Latin.
