Bio

I have always liked the simplicity and logical nature of Math and try to transmit that feeling to Math learners so they may gain confidence. Without confidence, learning any subject is much more difficult. I enjoy helping students explore their way to the solution with the Socratic method which is me asking questions and the student answering in a way that gets them closer and closer to the answer.

Without confidence, learning any subject is much more difficult. I enjoy helping students explore their way to the solution with the Socratic method which is me asking questions and the student answering in a way that gets them closer and closer to the answer.

I have taught Mathematics at the grade school, high school and college level. I have taught Mathematics in other languages such as in Portuguese in Brazil. I am not satisfied until a student has a good understanding of how to reason to the answer and not just "getting the right answer". This helps students in other ways with the issues they will encounter later in life. They need to think calmly and quietly about the various options that might lead to a solution, which applies to all problems we face in our lives.

I make the student think deeply about the problem which over time makes them a mature thinker. This will help them in their later Math courses.

I have taught and tutored Mathematics at all levels for many years, including Fairfield University, the University of Bridgeport, Harding High School in Bridgeport plus tutored grade school students. My students tend to do very well on their Math tests after being tutored by me. I've had D students begin to get A's on their tests. How is this possible? Math is not really as imperturbable or difficult as people generally make it out to be. If I can change your attitude about Math and build up your confidence in doing it, you will start to find Math enjoyable and very doable. That is my goal: to make you more confident about Math. There is a story of a Math tutor (not me) who tutored a student only by telling him that he could do each problem without telling him anything more. Each time the tutor said "you can do this", the student was able to do the problem. The issue here was the student had a complete lack of confidence that prevented him from thinking clearly when confronted with a Math problem. There is another story of a student who liked money and was told to think of every problem as a money problem. This enabled that student to begin ace-ing his Math tests. It's all about confidence not brains! You already have the brains. What you need is confidence. There is no reason what you can't be one of the "smart" Math students once you become confident!

I took Finite Math while doing my undergraduate work at Fordham University. I specialized in Algebraic studies after I received my PhD from the University of Rochester. Finite Math is just basically a mixture of Algebra and Statistics, both of which I have taught for many years.

Knowledgable and competent Finite math tutor

John is a phenomenal tutor. My son is a freshman in the business school and required to take Finite math (math for business). My son was struggling but once he used John (online sessions), he felt more comfortable and got a good score on last test well above average of class. John even made an excel (numbers) spread sheet with formulas for my son to study for test. After each session, my son feels much better and more prepared for upcoming tests. John really knows Finite math and explains it well. Trust me......my son struggles in math and John is helping very, very much. Great tutor!!!!
