I have always liked the simplicity and logical nature of Math and try to transmit that feeling to Math learners so they may gain confidence. Without confidence, learning any subject is much more difficult. I enjoy helping students explore their way to the solution with the Socratic method which is me asking questions and the student answering in a way that gets them closer and closer to the answer.

I have taught Mathematics at the grade school, high school and college level. I have taught Mathematics in other languages such as in Portuguese in Brazil. I am not satisfied until a student has a good understanding of how to reason to the answer and not just "getting the right answer". This helps students in other ways with the issues they will encounter later in life. They need to think calmly and quietly about the various options that might lead to a solution, which applies to all problems we face in our lives.

I make the student think deeply about the problem which over time makes them a mature thinker. This will help them in their later Math courses.

You may contact me with any questions that have been bothering you about Math problems you always wanted to understand but never got a good answer from any teacher.

I have taught and tutored Mathematics at all levels for many years, including Fairfield University, the University of Bridgeport, Harding High School in Bridgeport plus tutored grade school students. My students tend to do very well on their Math tests after being tutored by me. I've had D students begin to get A's on their tests. How is this possible? Math is not really as imperturbable or difficult as people generally make it out to be. If I can change your attitude about Math and build up your confidence in doing it, you will start to find Math enjoyable and very doable. That is my goal: to make you more confident about Math. There is a story of a Math tutor (not me) who tutored a student only by telling him that he could do each problem without telling him anything more. Each time the tutor said "you can do this", the student was able to do the problem. The issue here was the student had a complete lack of confidence that prevented him from thinking clearly when confronted with a Math problem. There is another story of a student who liked money and was told to think of every problem as a money problem. This enabled that student to begin ace-ing his Math tests. It's all about confidence not brains! You already have the brains. What you need is confidence. There is no reason what you can't be one of the "smart" Math students once you become confident!

AP Calculus

Last October, my daughter signed up to take AP Calculus at her high school. She had two years of experience with her math teacher. However, the teacher had done an inadequate job of teaching her the foundations. I found Dr. John D. through a recommendation through Wyzant. For the past eight months, and two days every week, my daughter has improved her grade from a D to an A. I am grateful he took the time to find her weaknesses and reteach what she did not know. As a teacher, Dr. John D., is patient, humorous, good-natured, and respectful. He also was willing to work around my daughter's crazy, athletic schedule. Thanks to Dr. John David, my daughter would not have passed the class.

What a difference one hour can make!

John D. is the best! He is so patient and understanding. I appreciate the time he spends to help me with content outside the general area of statistics in order to better support my learning.

Knowledgeable

Excellent Calculus tutor who was well-prepared, on time, and always available! He encouraged me to share my assignment for his review before the lesson. I highly recommend him.

so many tips and tricks

John helped me build my confidence by showing me some easy shortcuts to problems I was struggling with. Learn with him and math will become easy. He's also really encouraging and honest with you- it seems like he has a lot of experience with how to do well on standardized tests.

Very patient and kind

John was very kind and patient with me. I am an adult student going back to school and he was encouraging which made me feel much better. I have always been very self conscious about my math skills and John is going to work with me throughout the semester with my course.

learned a lot off of John

John really helped me understand how to use the proper form to find out my answers for my homework. He went through a pdf I sent him the previous night and was able to explain everything. We went over regression and how to calculate it.
