Specialty subjects:

- English (with appropriate leveled materials)
- Home Schooling, Elementary
- pre-Algebra / Algebra

In addition to traditional subjects, I can:
- boost confidence
- reduce anxiety
- increase self regulation
- improve study skills
- develop time management skills
- set and accomplish goals with students

I earned a PhD in Educational Equity and Cultural Diversity, and I have taught other teachers how to improve their methods for teaching English learners. I can also teach students and families how to advocate for students’ learning with teachers, counselors, and administrators.

My approach involves tutoring the whole person. I bridge between students' natural motivators and learning styles, and their learning goals. I break down concepts, projects, and tests into manageable chunks so that students can learn. And I connect with students, build on their motivation, tailor learning to their multiple intelligences, and boost their confidence.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Pre-Algebra and Algebra: I have tutored these subjects off and on for about 20 years. I most recently co-taught an Algebra 1 class in the Westminster School District, and I tutored students in Algebra 1 in Boulder Valley School District. I love how we can use Algebra in real life situations. When I help students to bridge between the math-talk and real life, it sets up their foundation for higher math, and their confidence as budding mathematicians.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I am licensed to teach k-5 all subjects, as well as secondary social studies and English as a Second Language (grades 6 - 12). In ESL classes we covered all subjects, and I co-taught middle school Algebra, diversifying teaching strategies to help all students learn. I became fluent in Spanish in Costa Rica, and have helped elementary to high school students succeed in Spanish. I've tutored off and on for 20 years. In addition to teaching math, reading, and Spanish, I can help your student improve their confidence and reduce anxiety.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I've been tutoring math off and on since I was in high school. Currently I mostly tutor elementary math students and the Executive Functioning skills that math utilizes. I also help improve students' confidence and reduce anxiety in math.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I've taught adult ESL, middle school ESL, and elementary school ESL. I love working with diverse learners at a variety of English levels. We can cover reading /writing /listening /speaking, English for particular purposes, or whatever would best support you. I earned my PhD in Educational Equity and Cultural Diversity at CU Boulder, and am certified to teach k-12 Linguistically Diverse Education by the state of CO. I've also taught at CU's International English Center, among other places. Si Ud. habla espanol, podemos clarificar asuntos con espanol tambien, si prefiere.
Homeschool

Homeschool

I am certified by the state of CO to teach Elementary Education, Linguistically Diverse Education k-12, Social Studies Education gr 6-12, English Language Arts 7-12. I am also fluent in Spanish and have tutored it, as well as living in Costa Rica and traveling to Mexico. I have taught elementary small group math and literacy, and supported teachers in Algebra and Physical Science. My diversity of skills makes me an ideal candidate for home school families who may be interested in multiple subjects. My sister home schools, so I understand what it's like to home school, and I'm here for you to support all you do for your family's education. I am available during the day and would love to hear from you and tailor a program for your needs.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I started tutoring math when I was in high school, and I have tutored and taught for over 15 years since then. I most recently co-taught Algebra in a middle school, where I made connections to real life examples, and used a variety of strategies and explanations to make the work accessible. Students grew in their abilities and their identities as young mathematicians. I've also supported small group work with girls who lacked confidence in math. We started with what they could do, and I showed them how to take it one step at a time, until they accomplished more challenging work. They learned a lot and had fun while doing so!
Reading

Reading

I served as a literacy and math interventionist at the elementary and middle school levels. I'll work with your teachers to use appropriate level texts and target the literacy skills your child needs.
Spanish

Spanish

I love to teach Spanish, as it is such an important language in our country and community, with such rich culture. I studied Spanish 8 years formally, including when my college professor told me "I can't teach you anymore. You have to go to another country." So I enthusiastically studied in Costa Rica the next semester. I have returned 3 times since, about 3 months total, as well as visiting Mexico 2 times. Languages can be harder for some of us than others, but I can help your student gain confidence and competency in Spanish.
