I can help you increase your ACT score by understanding how the designers of the test think and what they expect. You will take practice tests developed by the people who develop the actual test (and take the practice test on your time). When we meet we will only review your incorrect responses and help you understand what to do the next time to pick the correct response.

I'm a lifelong learner who enjoys sharing my passion for learning with others. I enjoy teaching and I'm patient with students. I focus on coaching students on the learning process as well as the content. I believe that every student is unique and work with each to find approaches to learning, studying and academic success that are attuned to their individuality.

I attended a private college prep high school. I took 7 AP courses in high school and work with students taking AP classes. I earned a B.A. from Rice University and have an MBA from CU-Boulder. Most of my career has been as a Management Consultant, IT Consultant, or Technical Sales Rep to companies and government agencies.

I tutor students in Middle School and up through high school, college, graduate school, as well as executives.

I'm a full-time tutor. If you're a high school senior or college student with open periods/time during the day, we may be able to find a time during the day to meet.

My mindset in working with students is that through my mentoring and coaching I provide my students with an essential freedom: the "freedom to choose" their future, rather than have it chosen for them, as free will is one of the many God-given gifts we all receive. I believe that students, parents and educators have an obligation to discover and develop the many gifts with which students are born. I see my role as that of a mentor and coach in the art and science of learning, and when the opportunity arises, providing life coaching to students at a critical time in their life.

For students looking for help in developing their writing, I've written two books (through CreateSpace) that can be found on Amazon: "5 Big Ideas for Cradle Catholics" and "What is Love? A How-to Guide" Each book is available as a free PDF download. If interested, contact me for the download website.

Here are subjects I've tutored quite a bit recently:

Elementary Education

Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I can help students struggling with Singapore Math understand how to build models to solve problems. I can help students increase their "Mental Math" capability that will enable them to do more math, more quickly, and more reliably. I can administer a diagnostic test that helps me identify a particular student's math strengths, weaknesses, and gaps. I then develop a custom plan to fill in the gaps and shoring up the weaknesses. I can provide challenge to elementary (and high school) students that are not being challenged, introducing them to Calculus, Statistics, Probability, etc. in a way that they can understand given their current understanding of math.
Reading,

Reading

I have just completed a graduate school course in teaching reading. As a result of the course I have developed a strategy to help students of all ages build their ability to read and write in English. While our brains are genetically wired to learn to speak languages, reading and writing must be taught, as there is no genetic wiring for reading or writing. English is one of the most difficult languages to learn how to read and write for a few reasons: 1) the English vocabulary is much larger than most other languages. Researchers at Harvard and Google just calculated the English language at 1,022,000 words and growing by about 8,500 words per year, 2) English spelling is a mess, with more than 1,100 spelling rules (compare that to Spanish's 46). These challenges don't arise when listening and speaking a language but arise when reading and writing. My strategy for improving English reading capabilities takes into account these challenges as well as each student's specific background, strengths, weaknesses, and goals. The solution harnesses modern technologies to address the challenges, taking into account strengths and weaknesses, and achieving goals in a novel and engaging way.
Study Skills,

Developing good study skills become increasingly important as students progress through school. I help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and work with them to develop a plan for learning that fits their individual traits. I also teach students specific approaches that are used by the best students to 1) increase memorization capability, 2) focus on what is important, and 3) increase their proficiency in taking standardized tests.

Algebra 1,

Algebra is the on-ramp to college and the professions, and it is a subject that I began teaching in the middle of Spring Semester 2012 and will continue teaching. Robert Moses calls math and algebra the ticket to 21st century citizenship, and I would agree. It is the foundation upon which all other secondary and college math and science success will be built, so it is of strategic importance to every student. I focus on working with students to understand the "why" not just the "how", so the "how" will stick. My goal is to help students master the subject so that it is a source of strength for their academic and professional career, not a weakness that hinders their future.

It's amazing to me that there is so much math related to the simple, humble triangle, but there is! The key to success in Trig is to realize that you need to think in "layers" (as many as 5 or 6 layers), and each layer must be mastered. Mastery comes from a solid understanding matched with lots of practice. If you take the right approach you can do well in Trig. It also helps to start a month or two before your Trig class starts to gain momentum in mastering the layers.

The Best Tutor

We have found Patrick to be an excellent tutor. He is extremely knowledgeable regarding testing methods, content, etc, and has been able to determine our grandaughter's mode of learning. He is timely, responsible, kind and thorough and has been of great help. He is the best tutor we have ever had and we are very pleased and feel confident that he has helped our granddaughter immeasurably.
