I am a tutor who is careful to listen and to try to find out how each student will learn best. I can tutor students from elementary school up past college. I have worked as a professional tutor in a university setting for the last two years, and non-professionally for the last three. I tutored upper level English, upper level Philosophy, Gen Eds, Graphic Design, and a nationally recognized Civ program which combined History and English. I was also a writing assistant, proofing papers, providing advice on research, argument, study habits, paper structure, composition and grammar. I would love to help any student, whether helping them polishing up their work or giving them hope and courage to learn the first thing.

I love tutoring because I love helping people. I think everyone is capable of amazing things, and I want to see people succeed and be confident about themselves. In the past I have worked at a Summer Camp for people with special needs, and I learned two things there: one, if you listen to people and encourage them, they can go a long way, and two, if you determine yourself to accept people no matter what, they can do things nobody believed they could. These are two things I try to live by, and to tutor by.

Aside from majoring in English in college, reading a lot, and scoring high in English & Reading on the ACT, my qualifications to tutor English also come from the way I have been taught to think. In particular, I am qualified to help you for two reasons:

First, the same thing which makes someone good at talking and listening to people is often the same thing which makes someone good at writing papers. This does take work, but knowing it helps immensely with English in general and paper-writing in particular, and this is a big part of how I tutor.

Second, my experience with philosophy gives a good back-bone to my thinking and helps me to help students learn to have an intellectual back-bone in their own thinking and writing.

Drawing

I took drawing and art classes in high-school, and my minor in college was graphic design. One of the first classes we took was Drawing Basics, in which I got an A. I learned a lot through the book, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, by Betty Edwards, which we used in high school and college, and many of the methods in that book are pretty easy to walk others through, with great results.

I took a calligraphy class in college and a lot of techniques and habits encouraged in calligraphy are also helpful in practicing and maintaining good handwriting (although calligraphy is not the same thing as handwriting, of course). As a Graphic Design minor, issues of Typography and readability were common concerns in every project and this experience in design informs my ability to think critically and creatively about handwriting. What is more, I have had to work on my own handwriting, so I do not look down on someone with bad handwriting and I understand how it can be frustrating. Lastly, and very importantly, I am a patient person who is intentional about challenging those I work with while being very encouraging.

At Oklahoma Baptist University, I took a 3 credit hour class on Old Testament and a 3 credit hour course in New Testament. I made A's in both and professionally tutored students on these topics, also leading occasional group sessions. I have been reading the Bible more or less consistently for the last ten years and I have participated in and led Bible studies.
