About David

Hello! My name is David and helping students succeed in school is my passion. My tutoring career began in 2011 when I volunteered for Reading Partners, a non-profit organization that assists elementary school students who are struggling with reading comprehension skills. I later applied as a writing tutor for CSU East Bay's Student Center for Academic Achievement (SCAA) and helped college students from many social and ethnic backgrounds polish their essay writing skills. After graduating with a bachelor's in English in 2012, I became an independent contractor for Buddy Systems Tutoring and helped high school students in the Bay Area improve their writing and study skills. In 2015, I earned my secondary teaching credential in English and currently have three years of experience teaching English to middle school and high school students.

My teaching and tutoring philosophy is focused on preparing students for the challenges and rewards of working and living in a democratic and pluralistic society. These challenges include overcoming social and economic inequalities while keeping an open mind to new knowledge and customs that may make someone feel uncomfortable or question their own belief system. The rewards include financial security from landing a job and earning a livable wage, but also from the deep, personal satisfaction of achieving one's goals and having a positive influence on future generations. I often use the Socratic method when teaching or tutoring, which is a process of asking the student deeper and deeper questions to encourage and develop stronger critical thinking skills.

I can provide tutoring services for reading, writing, and speaking for grades 3-12. I can also tutor students in college English classes and provide editing and proofreading for essays. I have a flexible schedule and willing to meet in person or tutor online. Please contact me if you have any questions. I would be more than happy to work out any details. Hope to see you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I earned my English teaching credential from Humboldt State University and have taught middle school and high school English for three years. During my teaching career I have been trained in AVID instruction, which is a teaching philosophy that prepares students for college and academic success. In addition to my secondary teaching experience, I collaborated with a college professor for two semesters in English support classes at a title I charter school.

Grammar

I have the training and expertise needed to teach grammar to K-12 students and adults. For example, my Bachelor's degree in English from Cal State East Bay in Hayward required rigorous courses in modern English grammar and I attended Humboldt State for my English teaching credential. I can teach and reinforce concepts of grammar, such as relative pronouns, superlative adjectives, and modal auxiliary verbs.

Public Speaking

In college I took public speaking courses and participated in a speech competition, but my skills were sharpened during my time as a substitute teacher for the Benicia Unified School District. As a sub, I had to give directions and provide leadership for each class. I learned how to project my voice, speak in a clear manner, and make eye contact so that the teacher's lesson plan would be followed.

Writing

I have supervised and taught students from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds on the craft and process of writing in clear and cogent prose. I developed the foundation for strong teaching practices through a rigorous credential program under veteran mentor teachers. In addition to my teaching experience, I am also a published author of short fiction who has developed strong writing habits over years of training and practice.

Great tutor experience!

My son can't wait for David to arrive for their afternoon lessons. Stuart loves the interesting stories, lesson plans and perspectives David brings to the lesson. We know other parents will appreciate David's skill set, experience and knowledge as a teacher. It just a matter of time before some school district will snatch him up for a full time teacher role.
