As a retired classroom secondary level English teacher, Wyzant students are a joy to work with as I have years of professional development, and a treasure trove of materials and strategies that enable me to be effective with developmental through advanced level students. Whether it's a Shakespeare play or a 3rd grade book, an argumentative essay or a how-to paragraph, Greek/Latin roots or basic phonics rules, I will enjoy working on it with your student. My innovations with students recently incorporated reading and writing about US history, rhetorical speech, scientific articles on pandemics, and MLA response to literature prompts as supplementary supports for different skills and levels.
I'm fun but reliable, organized but flexible, and fully credentialed and insured.

ESL/ESOL

I was a sought after ESL/ESOL teacher for many years in San Diego County and have taught ESL I - III and Project Write to over 25 different language backgrounds. I was blessed with the latest and most effective teaching techniques as my high school district and county provided me with a variety of workshops and classes over the years. Overall many of my students tested out of ESL I and skipped ahead to ESL III after 6 - 10 months of instruction with me. Since becoming a tutor with Wyzant, I have developed and specialized in very effective accent reduction for several English as a Second Language professional speakers including providing considerable assistance to job-related oral and written presentations.

Grammar

Grammar "rules" rarely change, so once you've learned them, you can apply them when necessary for the rest of your life. I'm effective at breaking down rules and proving the very best in simple instruction. A good grammar book and a few diagnostic lessons with me will go a long way to reducing errors in speech and writing for social, school, and work success.

Phonics,

Phonics

Even though I love literature, I've always had students who benefited from basic phonics instruction to help them read faster and spell better. The words in the English language are spelled just like the word sounds in only 65% of our words. But there are many easy rules, review exercises, and remedial work available for all ages to help tackle some of the words that do not sound like they look. I've guided beginning readers from non-readers to fluent grade level readers in as little as 9 months.

My students benefit from my specialized phonics and critical thinking reading types instruction as I've taught reading in a clinical setting, federally funded test out programs, and mainstreaming ESL and special ed student development of reading skills into, through, and beyond the classics.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I promote successful vocabulary acquisition with practice in two skills areas: vocabulary in context (Can you figure out the word's meaning from the other words in the sentence?) and structural analysis (Is there a common word part, root, or prefix that you recognize?) My reading students as well as English as a Second Language learners have significantly increased their vocabulary levels.

I taught all needs levels of students in English 7, 8, 9, and 12 with great success combining school district and state standards with individual learning needs such as spelling and written expression. I am very familiar with the literature and writing types for each grade level. In addition, I am trained in common core standards, citing text quotes in writing, analysis for argumentative essays, elements of the precis and Socratic Seminars, as well as skilled instruction of any Shakespeare play.

Great Tutor

Sherry is a wonderful writing tutor. My daughter has had three sessions with her and seems to feel comfortable with her teaching/tutoring style. Sherry comes very prepared to the tutoring lessons. She was quickly able to identify my daughter's areas of weakness and has come up with goals and a plan to attain them. She also takes the time to keep the parents informed of the plan and progress. A great tutor!

Highly efficient tutor

I see amazing results in my kids grades in middle school. I have tried couple of ELA teachers for my kid before trying Sherry and she is amazing. Thank you Sherry for being patient and working with my kid.

High quality tutor

Sherry is best: professional, patient, knowledgeable! I enrolled my little son first with Sherry. After several sessions of tutorial, I know she is a very good teacher. So now I enrolled my old son also with Sherry.

Knowledgeable and patient teacher!

Sherry helped my son a few sessions so far and we found her very approachable and professional. She has been always well prepared before each session and trying to organize different parts of the skills sets into each lesson to strengthen his weaknesses. From reading by using different voices to deep comprehension; from public speaking analysis to edit a writing. She is always very encouraging while pointing out the areas needs improvement. She is so responsible and respectful as well! We are planning on having her as my son’s long term teacher. I would definitely highly recommend Ms. Sherry to anyone trying to exceed in language arts.

Awesome teacher!

Very patient, knowledgeable and well organized teacher. She was able to capture a reluctant writer’s attention with different resources. This was the first virtual lesson that my son was able to follow through and enjoy learning.

Knowledge and patience tutor

My daughter is a 9th grader. She has been taking weekly English class with Sherry for almost 3 months. To be honest, I’m not the kind of person would write comments or feedback. Till recently I heard many good feedbacks from my daughter, I decided to write a comment here for those who needs help of finding the right English tutor for their kids. Sherry is a patience tutor. She always prepare different type of reading materials to go over with my daughter in each class. As the time goes, she has a better understanding of my daughter’s skill level. She reviews my daughter’s class essay and provide immediately helps whenever she needs help. And most importantly, this is the first time my daughter appreciated of having a English tutor that actually can help her, and she just realized that she is really doing better on her English honors class compares to other of her friends. Thank you so much for your hard works Sherry. So lucky we found you!
