About Justin

Bio

Hey, I’m Justin. I’ve always believed that intuition, or a talent for being able to recognize patterns faster, is the most valuable skill when it comes to competitive math/coding or the majority of AP classes. This intuition is built from a strong foundation of problem-solving experience, and I’m here to build that foundation for my students from the ground up or polish what is already in place.

I have previously coached high school students in STEM clubs, with students achieving up to USAMO qualification and up to USACO Gold qualification. I have also coached high school students in a wide breadth of Advanced Placement (AP) coursework (Calculus AB/BC, Physics 1/2/C, Computer Science A). I have worked in both group and 1-on-1 settings, and I highly recommend individual sessions as they are much more effective and I can tailor to the student. Students should expect to spend time outside of sessions reviewing material. I’m always open to working with parents to ensure the success of my students. I use personalized teaching methods depending on the work ethic, learning style, and general learning speed of the student.

About me: I’m currently studying CS @ UCLA and working at YC startups. I’m a 4× AIME qualifier, USACO Gold, placed top 1% in LeetCode biweekly contests, and completed 13 APs (scored all 5’s).

AMC (Competition math)

AMC (Competition math)

I personally qualified for AIME with minimal effort through efficient studying techniques, including a 7th-grade qualification. I have coached high school students with poor AMC scores all the way to USAMO qualifications.
C++

C++

I completed most of my competitive programming journey using C++ (USACO, LeetCode). I used C++ for internships with backend work. I am currently using C++ to write low-level code for market-related algorithms.
Computer Science

Computer Science

I’ve shipped production systems as a co-founder/lead engineer (iOS SwiftUI app with WebSockets/TCP and an Azure-hosted Node/MongoDB backend), contributed as a Software Engineer + AI Consultant with BruinAI/OverlapAI, and built authenticated, tested APIs at Scoop serving 9,000+ users. On the research side, I’m first author on a NeurIPS paper from UCSD and built a text-to-SQL agent that reached #9 on the Spider2-snow leaderboard, and I code daily in Python, C++, JavaScript, and Java with frameworks like React, Flask, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB.
Machine Learning/ AI

Machine Learning/ AI

I was first author on “The Importance of Prompt Tuning for Automated Neuron Explanations,” published and presented at NeurIPS (8 citations; selected from ~10% of submissions). At UCLA’s MARS Lab, I improved a base text-to-SQL SpiderAgent by 267% and reached #9 on the Spider2-snow leaderboard (32% overall accuracy vs. 9% baseline) by integrating RAG + self-retrieval with LangChain/ChromaDB and Stanford’s textgrad. I also designed and evaluated four new comparison methods for LLM-generated neuron explanations, achieving a 63% improvement in ground-truth similarity via chain-of-thought and few-shot prompting.

Knowledgeable and kind teaching style

My daughter is aiming for a USACO gold. She was looking for skills to understand the question from a broader perspective, to quickly narrow down the strategy to approach each question. Justin understood the need and tailored his lesson for her. The lesson focused on her needs, and the delivery was effective and efficient, showing that Justin is a skilled tutor. He also has a friendly attitude and my daughter opened up easily for discussion. His kind guidance encouraged her engagement. Highly recommended.
