I believe that a great tutor provides a tool set for their student to solve difficult problems through their own efforts. By providing subject and student specific guidance, a tutor can, not only help a student master a specific topic, but also inspire self-confidence and curiosity. I enjoy discovering the individualized learning style of students and developing a personalized teaching plan that keeps them at a manageable but challenging pace.
I have always enjoyed helping fellow students learn. I particularly enjoy science and math classes and have performed well throughout high school and college. I earned scores of 5 on my AP tests in Biology, Chemistry, Calculus AB, and Calculus BC. I achieved perfect scores on my SAT Biology and Mathematics II Subject tests. After high school, I continued my education at UC Davis, earning a bachelors in Entomology and a bachelors in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior. Upon graduation, I had earned a cumulative GPA of 3.59, and the 2014 Outstanding Entomology Undergraduate award. I believe that my enthusiasm for the process of learning and desire to understand the people I work with equip me to effectively guide students through difficult subjects.
Solving math problems is a lot like building a machine: little bricks of information must be organized into novel, creative ways in order to achieve a specific result. In order to facilitate this process, I seek to give students more bricks, and a better understanding of how they can be fit together. This is achieved by ensuring proficiency in lower levels of math, practice in enough general examples to build "muscle memory" of techniques, and exposure to interesting, mind-stretching examples at appropriate times.
Through my double majors, I have developed a strong foundation in a wide spectrum of biological topics, including evolution, ecology, genetics, molecular biology, cell biology, physiology, and cognitive science. This range of experience has allowed me to become familiar with major patterns and overarching themes in biology. As a biology tutor, I seek to present diverse examples of major themes, guiding the student to see a coherent picture rather than a set of "to-be-memorized" facts. Once major themes are understood, important details can be presented to further overall understanding. I believe that a great tutor provides a tool set for their student to solve difficult problems through their own efforts. By providing subject and student specific guidance, a tutor can, not only help a student master a specific topic, but also inspire self-confidence and curiosity. I enjoy discovering the individualized learning style of students

Thermodynamics is a tough concept but with her excellent tutoring I was able to understand it. She knows her stuff and will put in the time to help you. We all need a Susan G. in our lives!
I really enjoy and benefit from having Susan as a tutor. She is very patient and will explain things to me as many times as it takes for me to fully understand them. I highly recommend her to anyone. She is amazing when it comes to science. I give her 5 stars. 😊
First lesson with Susan today. My daughter really liked her. She explained things better than her teacher could. She is very patient and knowledgeable. We plan on continuing lessons.
Susan was really helpful! She had an answer to every single one of my questions and helped me understand all the material I was fuzzy on! She is great!
My son has had many sessions with Susan for AP Chemistry. She's been able to explain it better than his teacher!
Susan is an excellent tutor. Who helped my daughter not only the homework problem but also additional material.I appreciate Susan's efforts.
My son had a lot of questions and gaps when reviewing for his upcoming AP biology test. Thankfully, Susan saved the day! She explained difficult concepts in a way my son understood and ensured he had a thorough understanding before moving on. My son immediately felt comfortable with her and appreciated her deep knowledge of biology. He is looking forward to working with her on a regular basis.
For the first time, my son seemed excited about algebra and the 'light' went on' in as little as a few minutes. She had a way of explaining the problems in a way my son would understand. I will definitely call Susan back for tutoring.
Susan is exactly who we were looking for. She is very thorough, patient and kind. We look forward to having her back.
We just started with Susan, and she has been extremely helpful in tutoring my Son in Trigonometry! She is patient, and is completely explaining all the concepts to him.
Susan went over questions for the AP Chemistry test that my son, Jack will take tomorrow! She was very helpful and extremely knowledgeable!!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As an Entomology undergraduate from UC Davis, I was given a solid education in plant sciences. My curriculum included Plant Physiology, California Floristics, Plant-Virus-Vector Interactions, Plant Pathology and Plant Biochemistry. After college, I continued my education in the plant sciences by working for the Plant Pathology Department as a research assistant. Our field crew worked to investigate the effect of forest fire on conifer pathogens. Through these experiences, I feel prepared to tutor in plant physiology, anatomy, taxonomy, systematics, and other subjects.
