...get math and science. I want to help students see this isn't true, that they CAN understand with the right help. I don't just tutor Science and Math skills, I try to also teach a Science and Math confidence...

COVID-19 update: I'll be helping students online for the time being. I will be happy to help you sort out and adjust to your online courses as we work through math and science classes together.

I remember what it was like to struggle with science and math subjects, and I hope to remove the anxiety and frustration from these topics. I think all students can understand these topics... IF they have someone who will teach them the way they learn best. Not all students learn or are motivated the same way, and I adapt my approach for each student's needs.

When students don't understand the material due to the pace and style of the classroom, they often take this to mean there is a problem with them -- they can't understand or get math and science. I want to help students see this isn't true, that they CAN understand with the right help. I don't just tutor Science and Math skills, I try to also teach a Science and Math confidence mindset!

I've been tutoring College and High School students for over 20 years - since my college work-study days! I've also taught classes at the University level, but I prefer working one-on-one so that I can really directly address individual questions and confusions. I take the material as slowly and patiently as needed to find your inner science or math Super Star! =)

I have a wide science background across biology, chemistry, and physics. I have a PhD in Biophysics and have worked as a research scientist and lecturer at Caltech, one of the top technical schools in the world.

I also tutor other topics, including history, English, and writing. I enjoy working with student to learn how to use a structured writing process to produce excellent papers and essays.

In addition, I have experience working with students with IEPs and learning differences. Specifically, I have worked with kids on the autism spectrum and with ADD/ADHD.

Everyone has a hidden Einstein in them! Contact me for tutoring and let me help you discover yours! ;)

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

It seems like the people who end up teaching math are the ones who just "got it" themselves, so they can't understand why others struggle. I had to work hard to figure out math concepts, so I can relate. It's great when I can help a young person get their bearing right from the start with Algebra 1.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Often when students have trouble in Algebra 2, it's due to a poor foundation in Algebra 1. I help my students review the material they need to know from Algebra 1 in order to understand the Algebra 2 material. I work on building math study skills, such as keeping their own study guide that includes all the important terms and formula from each chapter in one handy reference.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

As a research scientist in biophysics at Caltech, I actually use chemistry on a regular basis! ;) I can help you understand how the concepts you are learning in chemistry might be used on a practical basis. I've been tutoring high school, college, and graduate students for 23 years, and I like to help students gain confidence in their ability to learn new science related materials!
Geometry,

Geometry

Geometry tends to be a very challenging class, even for students with a good foundation in algebra, because it requires a new kind of spatial thinking as well as proofs. Teachers also tend to assume that students will be confident with the basics supposedly learned in middle school with just the briefest refresher. Add a fast pace, and students can quickly feel overwhelmed and get behind, which escalates because every chapter builds on the previous. I especially work with geometry students on skills to stay on top of the rapidly building material, as well as help them understand it by filling in missing gaps in knowledge.
Physics,

Physics

As a research scientist in biophysics at Caltech, I use physics to solve biological problems! ;) I've been tutoring high school, college, and graduate students for 23 years, including many years of teaching physics classes at various levels. I think physics is a great way to learn math, because you see directly how it's useful!
SAT Math,

SAT Math

When I work with students to prepare for standardized exams, including SAT Math, I use the following strategy. I have them get a lot of practice materials together and start by taking a practice test to see where they are at. This way we know how much work we have to do to get them to where they want to be! I think it's good to have a weekly action plan for working practice problems. Then, during our sessions, I can focus on teaching them the material related to the problems they've gotten wrong in practice.

ACT Math,

ACT Math

When I work with student preparing for a standardized exam, including ACT Math, I like to make sure they have lots of practice tests to work with. It's best if they've taken a full practice test before we meet, so we can see where they are at compared to where they want to be. I provide ideas on how to approach the reading comprehension problems and work more quickly, which they can then practice on additional tests. On the math sections, I focus on teaching them the material related to problems that they missed on practice tests.

Thank you, Julie!!!

Dear Julie, I just wanted to thank you for your fantastic work with my daughter this year. She is thrilled with her grade and I know this is the result of hard work by both of you- she and I are both very grateful! It was an all around great experience for us!

Thank you, Stella! It was my pleasure to work with your daughter. I'm glad she got a good grade in physics!

Algebra 2

Julie is a top rated tutor. She is top ranked for a reason. Very helpful. Highly Recommend. Was well prepared, used the Wyzant Whitebaord Screen sharing tool.. also taught her new technique

Outstanding, knowledgeable and patient tutor

It has been a true pleasure seeing how each tutor session with Julie H. has helped my son gain increasing confidence and mastery over the subject matter that he once found challenging. Julie has been extremely responsive and flexible to schedule sessions in advance of quizzes and tests. She has helped my son grasp key concepts by walking through problems together to explain areas of difficulty. Further, she has provided invaluable test preparation and test taking insights for him to consider and apply. As a parent, I have been especially appreciative of the detailed notes that Julie provides immediately following each tutor session on what was covered and areas for him to further practice. I think that her knowledge, expertise, patience, and ability to explain things in a way that resonates with my son have been invaluable in helping him raise his standing in class by a full letter grade. Thank you, Julie!

Knowledgeable, nice tutor

Julie understood quickly what help was needed and she is aligned with the learning goals. She has a nice demeanor and seems very knowledgeable. We are fortunate to have found her!

Incredible

Thank you Julie for all your help tutoring our daughter in math and science this year. You have been able to get complex materials ‘in’ her head so that she understands it and isn’t just trying to memorize a bunch of steps that break down over time. We are so grateful we found you and look forward to seeing you next year! Thank you!

Magical tutor!

Julie quickly responded to my request and we set up a lesson time for the next day. She helped my daughter who was feeling anxious and overwhelmed after her first week of high school. My daughter stayed focused for the entire 3 hour lesson and even continued to study after the session ended. Julie is gold!!!

Tutor responded:

Thank you so much, Jennifer! I'm so glad I could help your daughter get a good start during her first week of high school!

Knowledable and patient

Julie was extremely helpful, it was clear that she was trying very hard to help me understand the concepts in physical chemistry. She provided me alternative readings that were much easier to understand than the textbook. Moreover, when doing problems with her, she guided me and showed me her process of thinking and how I could apply it to solving these problems.

Excellent Tutor!!

Julie has been a great "find" as far as tutors go! She has a way of listening and then relating to my daughter in a way that works. My daughter was struggling with AP Physics, but, Julie has been able to explain things clearly and has given my daughter confidence again. Julie has been very responsive to our "emergency" requests for help. She goes out of her way to try to meet our scheduling challenges. My daughter & I both highly recommend Julie!!

Patient and easy-going!

She vas very patient and understanding! Her vast understanding of Math and Science shows, as she was able to identify the variety of topics we covered in a heartbeat!

Michael, 6 lessons with Julie

Knowledgeable and kind!

My 15 y/o daughter was reluctant to have a tutor, but agreed to try one lesson. Julie won her over with her kind and approachable manner. My daughter requested to see her again the next day because Julie's teaching was so helpful!
