Bio

I have an MA in math from State University of New York and an MS in computers from Case Institute of Technology. Besides 25 years of software experience, I have taught part-time in the math and computer science department at San Jose State University. I love to see my students understand the principles and apply them to solving problems and will try different ways to make these clear to them, depending on their ability and background.

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have taught intermediate algebra to students from different ages and background for many quarters and understand the difficulties the students may have and how to help them to think in math and learn the computation skills as well.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have taught and tutored algebra 2 for many quarters to college students and know how to make the concepts and skills clear and easy for the students to understand.
Calculus,

Calculus

I have been teaching local HS students in AP Calculus both AB and BC for the last 10 years with many achieving 5 on the exams. Besides helping the students to master all the required prerequisite math skills, I try to give the students the intuitive reasoning capability that comes from a deeper understanding of the nature of the subject.
Geometry,

Geometry

I have been helping students in geometry for over 10 years with very good results. Geometry requires insights and intuition in seeing the geometrical picture. I try to help the students see these crucial ideas or pictures through a variety of problems of different difficulties. The goal is to help the students to develop these intuition and pictures themselves so they can mature in this part of math - geometry.
Physics,

Physics

I have taken many Physics classes, including graduate level ones, during college and loved and excelled in them. I found the way to learn Physics is to understand the few crucial concepts really well, then the rest is simply applying them to different situations and, of course, having reasonably good Math foundations is important and necessary. I have been helping students in High School and college level Physics with very good results.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I have been helping students in prealgebra for over 10 years with great results. Students differ in their readiness in prealgebra. I try to show them the essence of math reasoning - how to analyze a situation quantitatively. By this time, the arithmetic skills of add, subtract, multiply, divide are well managed, but one key point here in prealgebra is to see when to do add versus multiply or divide - how does it work. I try to expose to them a wide variety of interesting and challenging problems to illustrate this analytical process, with a goal of helping the students acquire this logical reasoning skill through prealgebra naturally.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I have been tutoring precalculus for 6 years with great results.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

I have aced my SAT Math test as well as SAT Math subject test. I believe the way to improve on the SAT Math performance is to systematically work on and improve the underlying math and logic in working the problems. Over a period of time, this will improve both the performance on SAT Math as well as one's Math ability.

Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

I have taken many graduate level classes in the area of Discrete Mathematics, including Probability (including Combinatorics and Permutations), Statistics, Analysis of Algorithms, Graph Theory, Network Analysis, Security Analysis, Digital Systems, and Number Theory. I have mastered the knowledge of Discrete Mathematics in these classes both the concepts and the ability to solve difficult problems. I have also taught and tutored many students in this area of Discrete Mathematics. I am able to understand their difficulties and find a way to help them grasp the concepts.

I am helping a number of 10th grade students in algebra and trigonometry (honors) at Paly and Gunn, and my approach is to help them with their basic understanding as well as the reasoning ability in solving problems. The aim is to increase their self confidence as well as their performance when they have to solve trigonometry problems.

You will NOT find a better math tutor!

Peter is simply the best tutor we've ever come across – by far! My daughter has always had issues with math and then was diagnosed with a learning disability. We've gone through countless tutors. We found Peter to help with both algebra and statistics and he was somehow able to figure out how to explain things to my daughter in a way that she understood, helping her connect the dots. This is an invaluable attribute in a tutor. He is amazing. Peter cares. He goes above and beyond. I can’t recommend him enough.

Knowledgeable and patient

Great teacher! My son loves him. Peter is very patient. He explains the concept for my son and went through test preparation with him. So he can be ready for the calculus test the next day.

Very knowledgeable and thorough

Peter taught my 8th grader Algebra and explained how a given problem is solved step by step very methodical. My son was engaged. Peter also provided some additional problems to ensure that the student understands the concepts well.

Great Tutor - Patient, detail and inspiring.

Here is my daughter's thought on Peter (Mr. T.) and his inspiring tutor method: "I have been tutored by Mr. T. for almost a year now, and I have seen great advancements in my aptitude for, and confidence in, mathematics. He not only has taught me math concepts, but he also has cared for me as a student through his genuine encouragement and utmost patience. This past junior year, Mr. T. has tutored me in AP Calculus AB. Prior to his tutelage, I have always struggled to maintain a math grade that my efforts deserved. Approaching AP Calculus AB without the incredible help from Mr. T. would have been an inevitably hopeless situation for me. I would have given up right from the start, but Mr. T. had guided me through the blatant difficulties and intricate nuances of calculus. By the end of the year, I transformed a low B grade to an A grade, thanks to Mr. T.'s support and belief in my abilities. He has really changed my attitude towards math, and I no longer view it as a daunting subject. I am most definitely going to continue my studies with him for this upcoming year in AP Calculus BC."

Great Tutor!

Peter is a very experienced, knowledgeable teacher, who takes pride in his work and tries to help out his students in many different ways, even outside of the in-person tutoring sessions. He is also very flexible and understanding when it comes to changes in the schedule. Peter has helped me to succeed in my Calculus II college course and improve my grade dramatically. I highly recommend him!!!

Excellent Teacher!

Peter has been tutoring our daughter in Algebra 2 honors. He is very patient and thorough! He truly seems to care about the learning experience and is an excellent teacher. He keeps focused and gives relevant practice work for our 14 year old to do on her own. He's also been flexible with her busy schedule. We are very happy to have connected with him!

Best tutor of Algebra 1

We are very satisfied with Peter's tutoring of Algebra 1 for my son during this summer who will be a 8 grader soon. And he is a the most wonderful math tutor we have ever used for the reasons below: 1)punctual and well prepared every time 2)well organized and planned, and he helped my kid finish learning the whole new book of Algebra 1 (HOLT) within the summer. 3)quick in response to our questions 4)patient and always encourage kid to learn better We are very happy to find such a good tutor. And if we have future math tutoring needs for middle school or high school, we will definitely use his service again.
