Drawing on my diverse background, I tutor students in Music and Chess (beginning-intermediate), Math (K-8), and English (reading and writing: K-12). I am Yale-educated with specialized training from the Grove School of Music in Jazz Piano, Harmony, and songwriting. I am also a certified Kaplan instructor in Math and English.

My teaching style is relaxed and democratic. Rather than spoon-feeding students answers, I help them discover the right answers (or notes) on their own, by asking them questions. This helps them better understand the concepts, while improving their self-confidence and ability to learn and think independently. To this end, I also spontaneously create exercises and, for Music students, songs that focus on areas that challenge them. My playful humor enables students to feel comfortable making mistakes so they can reach beyond their comfort zone.

Depending on students' interests, piano lessons may include note-reading, technique and harmony; improvisation; ear-training; and songwriting. Through this training, my students understand what they're playing and are able to interpret music.

For Math students, lessons can incorporate modeling, real-life examples, educational games, apps, and a touch of humor to make learning EXCITING. I have also partnered with a retired English and Math teacher who designs games that help children grasp Math concepts.

English students' lessons might include grammar, reading, comprehension, pronunciation, writing, and vocabulary. I also show students how to build their vocabulary by journaling interesting phrases they come across and reviewing word lists I used while preparing for the GRE.

Chess lessons for beginning players may cover rules, openings (including analysis of moves within them); and, for intermediate players, middle and endgame strategies.

Let's talk soon about how I can help your child or you become more proficient in your desired subject, while developing critical skills and having fun doing it.

General Music

I hold a BA from Yale College, a Certificate in Jazz Piano and Composition from DIck Grove School of Music, an Instructor Certificate from Kaplan, and an MBA from Purdue University. In addition to teaching Music, Math, English, and ESL to students of diverse ages, backgrounds, and skill levels, for over 20 years, I've performed solo jazz piano and played with Jazz, R&B, and top 40 ensembles in diverse settings including the Chevron and Filipino Jazz Festivals, and the Fairmount, RItz-Carlton, and Claremont hotels. What distinguishes me from other teachers is that I tailor lessons to students’ unique personalities, learning styles, and musical preferences. Consequently, no two lessons are the same. Depending on students’ needs, customized lessons have included site reading, harmony, technique, ear training -- as well as learning songs.

Reading

I have taught English and ESL to students of numerous ages and backgrounds. After working with me in Reading and Writing, an ESL community college student improved her grades dramatically, matriculated to USF where she received Cum Laude Honors, and eventually earned an auditing position at PwC. I've had similar success tutoring 1st generation grade school children in English (reading and writing), Math, and History and coaching at-risk high school students.

looking for genuinely personalized lessons? right here.

Had my first lesson recently, and honestly nothing but good things to note. As someone that teaches more than just piano he's first off a excellent communicator and immediately gauged where to start based on my skills and not just a lesson plan that everyone/anyone can get. If you want someone to work with you from where your current skill sets are you shouldn't look elsewhere. Looking forward to learning under Marshal for as long as possible, and i genuinely implore whoever might be considering him to do the same! Truly a real educator.

Dedicated, Creative and Knowledgeable Tutor

Since the first day that Marshal began tutoring our daughter, we've noticed immediate improvements with her reading. He's very patient, thoughtful and creative. His understanding of how to communicate with children really enhances his teaching abilities. Furthermore, Marshal is super flexible when our family has to travel, so our daughter doesn't miss her lessons. He makes himself available for online appointments. We highly recommend Marshal as a tutor!

Knowledgeable

he lessons with Marshal? I will give him a B+; however, I am still planning using his services next year. He helped me with some tips when I was in an emergency to complete my final exams and I didn't understand some concepts. He took the time to explain me for this past semester from my Music 100 class, Fundamentals and Theory of Music, complicated lessons for me. Thank you!

Very skilled and knowledgeable.

Having never played the piano or any other musical instrument I need a tutor that is very patient. Marshal takes the time to explain things. Looking forward to more lessons.
