Hello! My name is Colleen and I have been tutoring and teaching in a variety of capacities for the past 15 years. I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Columbia University with a major in Sociology in 2014. Since then I spent two years as a high school math teacher, two years as the Director of Instruction at a tutoring and college counseling company, 1 year getting my masters in education at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, and the last 5 years teaching 7th grade math, 8th grade math and Algebra 1 at a middle school in Oakland Unified School District. This year I have transitioned out of the classroom to work on math curriculum development with Amplify Desmos Math.
I love tutoring because I love helping students. Not only do I love teaching content (I am certified Secondary Mathematics, Social Studies, and English as a second language), but I also love teaching students how to understand the tests that they are taking. I believe that in order to do their best, tutors and teachers should have frank conversations with students about how and why tests are created the way they are.
I am an outstanding math tutor because I have looked at math curriculum from different viewpoints and have helped a wide variety of students. Having taught 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th graders, I have the ability to see the curriculum as a continuum and can help students to see the connections between what they have learned in different years.
