My greatest experience with the GRE is with teaching the math section. Oftentimes adult students haven't seen a right triangle in ten years, and may need a brush up on basic math skills. I use drills and worksheets to help students regain their prior proficiency in these basic skills, as well as learn a few new ones necessary for this particular test. I also have experience teaching the verbal (as well as writing) section, though now that the test has been revised, there are unfortunately fewer typical multiple choice tricks one can use (namely-- process of elimination). However, I can guide students in general principles of reading comprehension and vocabulary to help them grapple with the test, regardless of the fact that the new format is more challenging than the prior iteration of the test. A couple of successes: I've had one student improve her math score by 20 points (from ~20th percentile to 89th!), and another score within a few points of perfect overall on the exam for admission to a top 10 program in her field.

This section is straightforward in the sense that you either know the rule or you don't-- with the exception of the essay and idiomatic usage questions. I help teach students these rules and generally see good results-- and occasionally, dramatic score increases. For the tougher idiomatic questions-- I have idiom lists and techniques students can use to increase their chances of doing well on these tough questions. I also have specific strategies that I teach for students to maximize their essay score depending on their individual writing strengths and weaknesses.

Rather than ask questions in a straight forward manner, the test is constantly asking students to dive in and use what they know -- and figure out the problem as they go. I help teach this problem solving method to students who are more used to math from school-- which requires them to look at and example problem and then do more problems exactly like the example. The SAT is different-- but that doesn't mean it can't be taught! It can! I break down strategies and "go to" ways of dealing with problems that may look impossible-- but actually use skills that many students already have. I also collate types of problems and drill skills in math-- so that students can conquer types of problems they may not have learned at school (probability, statistics, and sequencing -- or other areas that typically get neglected in schools that haven't gotten through the whole book by the end of the year).

I've helped several students better understand logic materials for their school subjects, from a student taking logic for her community college math requirement, to writing logical reasoning elements into the curriculum for an entire Southern California junior debate league (with over 500 students enrolled). I have experience teaching the basics of symbolic logic and propositional logic (conditional statements / if -- then / truth tables / atomic symbols), basic logic "language" (^ in / & out etc.), as well as more applied logic (LSAT logical reasoning multiple choice, the use of logical fallacy information on GRE essay questions, Logic Puzzles). I do not have a degree in Philosophy or Computer Science, so do not consider Logic my primary tutoring subject or expertise, but can help students who are struggling with the topic. Along with teaching the SSAT and ISEE, I have helped several students applying to Catholic high schools with the HSPT exam. Like the ISEE and SSAT, the HSPT exam tests students' knowledge of both math and reading. Overall, it is typically an "easier" test than the ISEE or SSAT, but students can still use problem solving techniques that I teach for standardized tests in general, and I can also target and address individual student weaknesses. With over 10 years teaching standardized tests, I have helped students reach their goals and gain admission to private Catholic schools.

As I have extensive experience teaching middle school math, and have scored perfectly on the SAT (recent test 2400), I also can apply my standardized test knowledge to the ISEE test. The ISEE is a standardized test used for admission to private school. The test comes in three levels -- lower, middle and upper. It tests math achievement, reading comprehension, verbal skills (vocabulary), and quantitative reasoning, and also includes an essay which is not scored, but sent to prospective schools. In my experience many students struggle on the ISEE because it is a multi-level test, meaning that 6th graders are confronting a test that includes topics they have never even seen in math class, or words they haven't learned! In the competitive private school admissions world, even though the test makers may claim that these younger students are not expected to know the upper level material, students who have private tutoring and can learn these skills despite their grade level carry a distinct advantage. Teaching students math and vocabulary beyond their grade level is usually a critical component of ISEE prep-- particularly for 4th, 6th, and 8th grade test takers. Of course, ISEE scores are only one component of private school admissions-- students are also judged according to their grades, interview, essays, and other factors. In any case, I have always seen students I've worked with improve their scores.

Please note I ONLY tutor the VERBAL section of the MCAT. I began tutoring this section after a student approached me because of my GRE, LSAT and SAT background, even though I did not at the time have MCAT on my resume as a subject I teach. After a couple months of lessons, he improved his verbal score by several points-- and subsequently I have gone on to work with several other students over the past several years who have wanted to improve their MCAT verbal scores. Teaching MCAT verbal is one of my favorite subjects, because the questions present a unique challenge! From my 10+ years of tutoring, I'm something of a reading comprehension expert. I've scored perfectly on the SAT and ACT reading sections, and have performed very well on the LSAT reading sections as well (I usually miss 0-1 per section-- and usually only miss questions when pressed for time). I've also had a GRE student I coached score in the 98+ percentile on the new GRE (168/170).

I've gotten a perfect score on the SAT Math section twice! Once in high school on the old format test, and again as an adult on the revised SAT. The problem a lot of students have with SAT math is that they look at a problem and they don't know where to begin. Rather than ask questions in a straight forward manner, the test is constantly asking students to dive in and use what they know -- and figure out the problem as they go. I help teach this problem solving method to students who are more used to math from school-- which requires them to look at and example problem and then do more problems exactly like the example. The SAT is different-- but that doesn't mean it can't be taught! It can! I break down strategies and "go to" ways of dealing with problems that may look impossible-- but actually use skills that many students already have. I also collate types of problems and drill skills in math-- so that students can conquer types of problems they may not have learned at school (probability, statistics, and sequencing -- or other areas that typically get neglected in schools that haven't gotten through the whole book by the end of the year).

The SAT Writing section is the most teachable portion of the SAT -- I've coached several students to a perfect score in this section, and several more to scores of 700+. This section is straightforward in the sense that you either know the rule or you don't-- with the exception of the essay and idiomatic usage questions. I help teach students these rules and generally see good results-- and occasionally, dramatic score increases. For the tougher idiomatic questions-- I have idiom lists and techniques students can use to increase their chances of doing well on these tough questions. I also have specific strategies that I teach for students to maximize their essay score depending on their individual writing strengths and weaknesses.
