About Carrie

Bio

In 2015 I earned my teaching credential and Master's of Education from CSULA, and I was an LAUSD teacher until 2021, teaching 7th grade math, Algebra 1, Precalculus, AP Calculus AB, and...

I'm a UCLA graduate with a B.S. in Mathematics for Teaching. I worked as a full time tutor from fall 2010 - summer 2014, which means I have over 1000 hours total tutoring experience working with students from 2nd to 12th grade, and beyond. In 2015 I earned my teaching credential and Master's of Education from CSULA, and I was an LAUSD teacher until 2021, teaching 7th grade math, Algebra 1, Precalculus, AP Calculus AB, and Exploring Computer Science. Now I am back in school to earn my degree in Computer Science.

I tutor every middle school or high school math subject including AP Calculus (Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Calculus, Geometry, Pre-algebra, Precalculus, Trigonometry). I also tutor in some university-level mathematics (Single Variable Calculus, College Algebra, etc). If the university-level math course you need help with is not listed, please feel free to contact me to ask if I can help you with it.

I teach not only the procedures for completing problems, but also why those procedures work, where the concepts are used in the real world and why they are important. I have many engaging, intuition-building real-world mathematics lessons prepared for the most challenging subjects that have been extensively tested in the classroom for effectiveness. Because I tutor in almost every level of mathematics, I can effectively help both students who need help catching up to their peers and students who need more challenging work than they are given in school. I truly love mathematics, and it is my passion to inspire new students to understand and appreciate its beauty. I can't wait to hear from you!

Note:
I generally only do in-home tutoring for students who live within about 8 miles of 90027 (East Hollywood in L.A.) but I am also happy to meet any student at a public location (coffee shop, library, etc.) in or near the area. Unsure if you are within my travel range? Feel free to contact me to ask, I would be happy to let you know. Also, I may be able to travel further for an additional fee.

I love tutoring students in College-Level Essay Writing! Although Math Education is my true passion, communicating ideas logically and organization naturally go along with that subject matter. Since organization and logic skills are key to any essay's argument, this is an obvious fit to my interests. Warning: I will mark your papers up in red ink, my comments are not few or far between.

I love tutoring students in college-level essay writing! Although math education is my true passion, along the way to my degree in Mathematics I also learned how to communicate my ideas clearly, and organize my thoughts well in writing, skills necessary in the pursuit of mathematics. Not to mention that there were also several writing classes I took at UCLA. I'm a tough critic when it comes to writing, but if you work with me your papers will turn out better because of it.

I am very passionate about teaching Geometry in a pedagogically sound way. I believe in teaching with discovery and proof in this course. I am an experienced student in the subject (one upper-division Geometry course at UCLA and a few weeks on teaching Geometry in a Teaching course also at UCLA), and my student teaching experience included some teaching of geometry at a LAUSD high school.
Prealgebra,

Precalculus

I love Precalculus. I have extensive experience tutoring in Precalculus because it is one of the subjects I am most commonly asked to tutor. Helping students to form the mathematical foundation for the challenging material in Calculus is very rewarding, as is working with the talented high school students who take this course. I will be teaching Precalculus in the classroom in the 2016-2017 school year and I look forward to learning even more strategies for student success in the subject.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry, the branch of mathematics dealing with the relations of the sides and angles of triangles and sine, cosine and tangent, is fun to teach because of all of the real-life applications. I am a believer in teaching why unit circle trigonometry is so useful, how it is related to basic triangle trigonometry and where it comes from. I have tons of experience teaching this subject because it is an integral part of most Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus courses.

Life Savior!

Carrie, saved my grade. As simple as that. I was completely lost in my calculus class at UCLA and she recapped the entire first half of the quarter for me. She pointed out the details that i needed to know, we did practice problems, she reviewed my homework and my quiz. Along with that, she not only helped me finish the practice midterm my teacher emailed us but she made another practice midterm on her own time. Carrie is very flexible, I can text/call her a few days before I need help and she's available and works with my schedule. I aced my midterm, and I'm seeing her again in two days! The most important thing is that we don't waste time, she isn't slow at helping me, she reviews the material before the session so we get a lot done in a little amount of time.

Great tutor

Great tutor that breaks down problems step by step explaining as she goes along. Very knowledge and able to explain the steps of each problem and why you do the things you do within it. Will get more sessions

Skilled, kind and knowledgeable.

Carrie was a great tutor who offered in-depth experience on preparing for my upcoming Pre-Calculus class in the fall. She was punctual and taught concepts to me in a way I could understand. Carrie allowed me to use her very expensive Pre-Calc textbook to take with me during sessions and practice what I learned. Carrie is a fantastic tutor and I would recommend her to anyone who needs help in Pre-Calculus.

Excellent Tutor

Carrie has been tutoring Geometry for my son, a freshman in high school, for the past several months. Carrie is punctual to our tutoring lessons and is patient, knowledgeable and very helpful with homework, class assignments and in studying for exams. She asks questions that enable my son to think the issues out and help him determine the answers under her guidance. He has done very well on his projects, homework and tests since she began tutoring him.

Knowledgeable, patient and dependable.

Carrie has been working with my 10th grader in Alg II for several weeks now and is doing a fantastic job. She is patient, knowledgeable and has great skills in explaining the material. She connects well and is a great role model for any high school student who wants to excel or continue to study math. Carrie is easily accessible, dependable and always on time. I recommend her highly!!

Great Tutor!

Carrie is a great tutor. She uses visual elements during the lesson. She is very patient and has great sense of humor. When I have a problem in Algebra, she's able to give me a different point of view and an easier way to solve the problem. I'm learning a lot and improving my grade.

Good Tutor

Carrie was on time, clear, to the point and made understanding the subject interesting and easy. Carrie stayed on subject, both my children understood what she was teaching and benefited from the lessons.

Knows everything!!

Carrie is a tutor who actually knows the material she is teaching. She doesn't have to look in the book and relearn it in order to help me. She knows her stuff and is very efficient. She answers me whenever I try to get a hold of her and is very compromising and understanding in regard to scheduling. She explains the material as opposed to helping me memorize it which is conducive to remembering it. My grades have drastically improved since I started using Carrie's help. I would definitely recommend Carrie to anybody who asked.

Etti, 42 lessons with Carrie

Awesome tutor

Carrie is an excellent Math tutor. She is patient and presents material so it is easy to understand. A very positive effect on Alg2/Trig Honors grade immediately and was maintained throughout the semester because of Carrie's help. We will definitely continue to rely on Carrie's expertise for that extra level of support through pre-calc and into calculus. Great experience!
