Qualifications for “algebra 1”

I've taught Algebra 1/2 at the college level and do so currently for one of the adult learning universities in town. I've also taught many other subjects in math. My style is relaxed and I like to ensure that students both learn the material and have a good time doing so.

Bio

Hi there. I have to admit even the summary of my resume won't fit in the two paragraphs that Wyzant is allowing. :-) So here's a very abbreviated verison. I received the Ph.D. in engineering from UCSD in 1992 and a B.S. degree in mathematical sciences (probability and statistics) from UCSB in 1985. I've received technical awards from various professional organizations and an honorary doctorate too. In 2009, I had the great privilege to be named one of the top-100 most influential alumni in...

In 2009, I had the great privilege to be named one of the top-100 most influential alumni in the then 50-year history of the University of California at San Diego. Since 2010 I have found that I really enjoy tutoring in statistics and other topics in math, and also helping on the tennis court. In my career, I've tutored kids in elementary school and kids (let's call them adults) in graduate school. I also teach adults through a local university and have consistently received very positive reviews. Generally, I only take on one or two students at a time so that I can focus the time that I do have for tutoring on those students.

One of the things that I strive for in tutoring is helping the student reach a point of understanding the material so that he or she has complete confidence that "they know their stuff." Same goes on a tennis court too. I also endeavor to have every interaction be fun and light-hearted, even when studying for exams or trying to learn otherwise difficult material. I think I have a knack for achieving those goals with a wide range of people, and I look forward to helping you as well.

Statistics

Statistics

I earned the BS degree from UCSB in math with an emphasis in probability and statistics. I took 13 p/stat courses as part of my undergrad degree (all 12 they offered plus an additional individual study course). My Ph.D. in engineering (systems) was essentially applied statistics for engineering. I've taught statistics at the undergrad and grad levels at UCSD, and also currently teach statistics for adult learning at a local university.

I've tutored math from grade school to grad school for a very long time. I started tutoring in high school (1979) and really enjoy helping people learn math, whether or not they're in elementary school or working on a Ph.D.
