I have more than 15 years of experience in tutoring students of all ages and levels of education from elementary to graduate school. I am most interested in changing the way my students perceive themselves when approaching math. Throughout the years, I have had the most rewarding experience when my students, besides turning their grades around, feel empowered to the point they become a math resource to their classmates. I take my classes very personally and work together with parents to identify my students' areas of weakness. I am a strong believer that by bringing a holistic approach to tutoring, tutors are successful in changing students' views of life in the most important aspects, preparing them to face the future with more confidence. This is my approach.

To me every student is smart. If there is a difficulty, it is because the fundamentals were not learned properly. Math is like a set of building blocks. No new concept is totally independent, rather it is an extension of a previous one. Students shouldn’t simply memorize formulas, they should understand where formulas are coming from. In this process, the brain gets trained for future problem solving situations. When I work with Freshman and Sophomore students, I am conscious that I am actually preparing them for the SAT and other admission tests earlier than in their Junior year.

In terms of subjects, my expertise is in all standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, GMAT, GRE as well Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, Statistics, Physics, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Business Calculus, and Spanish. As I instill my methodology to my students' study habits, they find themselves able to develop concentration skills to a level of solving the problems without writing.

Spanish skills: Being a native of Peru, South America, my command of the Spanish language is impeccable. This is because not only am I native but I have always paid special attention to learning the correct grammar, vocabulary and spelling, excelling at all touching points where Spanish is used. I make learning Spanish a fun experience by connecting with my students in an effective way after evaluating their needs.

My credentials include a degree in Civil Engineering from Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru and an MBA degree from University of Southern California (USC Marshall School of Business). I started tutoring when I was 15. My students have stayed in touch after more than 20 years, with most of them now successful professionals in various technical fields such as Engineering. My resume comprises my career accomplishments as International Marketing Director for a software company in the US, which provides me with strong analytic skills in order to approach my students' individual situation and craft the most effective plan of study that will help them reach levels of performance they didn't think capable of. This is my best reward. As teaching is one of my strongest passions, I would be delighted to make a difference in my students' professional careers. I enjoy teaching as much as I enjoy my Yoga practice, which is one of my hobbies.

GMAT,

GMAT

The GMAT is such an interesting and challenging test. Time is highly restricted and since it is a computer adaptive test, the test taker cannot move on to the next question until an answer has not been submitted. It is a matter of time management and a strategic approach to questions. Math knowledge for the quantitative section, in which I can help, is not expected to be no higher than High School level. Reasoning and logic will help you get to the other side. I successfully completed this test when applying to a top Business School, USC.
Marketing,

Marketing

I feel passionate about Marketing for its impact in organization's positioning in the marketplace at a global scale. Being an Engineer, I was hired by a technology company to direct their International Marketing operations. I executed this function with great success, managing an internal group of 13 people as well as public relations agencies in Mexico, Brasil, Saudi Arabia, Australia, New York and Los Angeles. The results, high profile press coverage in publications such as The LA Times, The Economist as well as foreign main newspapers and trade publications. Brand recognition and product positioning was also acquired in the various territories where the company operates. I attended UCLA Extension and obtained a Professional Designation in Marketing certification. I just graduated from USC Marshall School of Business with an MBA degree with concentration in Marketing.
Public Speaking,

Public Speaking

My International Marketing career took me to attend several conferences around the world. Speaking engagements were very important for my event strategy so I am used to speak to audiences coming from three main vertical markets: Government (Education, Local, State and Federal Government), Financial Services and Healthcare. Within these main verticals I had to tailor my message according to government agencies and organizations in different countries. I delivered the speeches, either in English, Spanish or Portuguese.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

The approach I give to this subject doesn't differ too much with that for other Algebra levels. Making sure students have the fundamentals of Algebra when assessment takes place during first lesson is my major concern. From there on is a matter of building up on new concepts. Building blocks is what Algebra is about.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

If the student does not have the fundamentals of Algebra, this is the moment to reinforce concepts before moving on with the Algebra 2 syllabus. Important concepts such as quadratic functions and their applications in real world problems are covered in Algebra 2. Introduction to probabilities and statistics are also covered here. Concepts and Algebra properties learned in Algebra 1 are continuously applied in solving Algebra 2 problems. Algebra 2 is also a gateway to Pre-Calculus which makes this subject an interesting bridge to higher level math subjects.
Calculus,

Calculus

Calculus is a subject that can be learned very easily. Being that PreCalc is a pre-requisite for Calculus, following our intuition and understanding the geometry and algebra behind the Calculus concepts as well as learning a few properties, makes Calculus a fun subject to learn and apply to real world situations.
Geometry,

Geometry

Geometry is one of my favorite subjects. I teach my students where formulas come from instead of just drilling them in memorization. Application of Algebra concepts to solve Geometry problems are reviewed.
Physics,

Physics

As a civil engineer, I have taken various levels of Physics in college. I have helped HS students improve their grades in Physics, but more importantly, I have helped them understand how Physics principles work in real-world situations. Formulas and graph interpretation become familiar and easy to understand in terms of deriving them.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

This is probably the most fundamental subject in Math. Students taking Algebra 2 will have to use properties learned in pre-algebra. I enjoy teaching this subject to make sure the basics are well learned. In addition, I have vast experience working with Middle and Elementary School students.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

As a building block on Algebra 2, and prior to Calculus, this is an important subject for students who want to pursue a career in a technology or science field. I have vast experience tutoring Algebra 2 not only because I have hundreds of hours with this subject but because of my engineering background.

Second to None!

I had multiple sessions with Elena for my final collegiate mathematics course. Math is certainly not my strong suit, which is why I was in dire need of a tutor. I began my sessions with her midway through my semester and I had a failing grade in the class after a series of poor assignments. With a series of daunting tests upcoming, I began working with Elena and remarkably finished the class with an A. I credit almost all of my success in the class to her methods. Her teaching style is very compassionate and her way of describing/relating the material into understanding is second to none. I highly recommend her to anyone who is struggling or wanting to get a better understanding of the material taught in their class.

An Outstanding Tutor In Every Sense

I didn’t consider getting tutored for the GMAT until I received my second GMAT score, which left me very disappointed and frustrated at myself for not studying smarter. Two weeks prior to a job which requires me to work 10-12 hours a day, 7 days a week (family business), I decided to get as much tutoring as I can — specifically for GMAT’s quantitative section. I’ve only been to group tutoring sessions during my college years so I felt intimidated to sign up for one-on-one’s. But I realized I was running out of time to prepare for the GMAT so to maximize the two weeks that I have before starting work, I decided to find a tutor who can help me hone the fundamentals of GMAT’s quantitative section. What drew me to Elena was her engineering background (strong quantitative skills), her familiarity with GMAT problems (she has taken the GMAT), and her extremely flexible tutoring hours. The cherries on top: her endearing personality, patience, professionalism and love for math and puzzles! Elena has a methodical approach to attack different types of problems and always took the time to make sure I understood each problem before moving onto the next. Overall, I really appreciate our efficient use of time together, and I always came out of each session feeling more and more confident in my ability to get a higher score on the GMAT.

Terrific and Knowledgeable!

Elena was exactly what my daughter needed. Her AP Statistics knowledge was invaluable. Elena helped my daughter learn material she missed in school due to a concussion. My daughter is now confident she will do well on the exams she missed. Elena will help also with H. Spanish V and Calculus. My son will use Elena for Spanish and Geometry. We will continue to use Elena's services for finals and the remainder of the school year. It is a blessing to have one tutor who can help both of my kids online and in our home with a verity of subjects.

Knowledgeable and Effective

Elena has been helping me prepare for the GRE in order to achieve my dreams of getting an MBA. When studying on your own, you get comfortable and settle, yet Elena pushes me out of my comfort zone with the intentions of making me a better more efficient GRE test taker. At first we started with reviewing the topics that will be on the GRE (verbal and quantitative) and from there we have started working on problem sets. Getting the problem correct is important but being able to do that with limited time is key to doing well on the exam. Elena begins to time you which begins putting you in the setting of the exam. Quick yet efficient is key with Elena’s tutoring style but she works her way up with you until she feels your ready for the next step. I have gone from being confused and closed minded to GRE problem sets, to now being able to come up with a plan of attack and the point is to get into the test writers mind set. Elena is extremely helpful, kind, and friendly but overall she is effective. She wants all her students to do well and be successful. I do not regret finding Elena to assist me with my future goals.

Professional Tutor

Elena is a great tutor, who is organized, efficient, and understands the challenges of being a working professional. I entailed Elena to help me study for the GRE, while working my professional job, on a full time status. She is a pleasure to work with and has brought me up to speed, since my High school/ college years. I have not received test scores yet, but my experience with Elena has been positive and I would recommend her to other students.
