Qualifications for “geometry”

In high school, Geometry was the subject I dreaded the most. Now, it is the subject that I tutor the most. My whole outlook on this course has changed and I have come to appreciate the order of the class. I can empathize with a student who feels lost and can help them make that same transition to seeing the beauty of Geometry, whether it is with angles, lines and triangles in first semester or surface areas, volumes, and circles in second semester.

About Philip

Bio

I tutor most branches of Mathematics including Prealgebra, Algebra 1 (Elementary Algebra), Algebra 2 (Intermediate Algebra), Geometry, Precalculus, Trigonometry, Statistics, and Calculus....

I am a full-time tutor with over 12 years and 4000 hours of experience just on Wyzant's platform. This is not my second job or an opportunity to make extra money for college; this is my profession. It allows me to be more reliable, consistent, and flexible with my scheduling. It also allows me to form long-term commitments with my clients' families.

I tutor most branches of Mathematics including Prealgebra, Algebra 1 (Elementary Algebra), Algebra 2 (Intermediate Algebra), Geometry, Precalculus, Trigonometry, Statistics, and Calculus.

I also tutor the main Science classes - Chemistry (both General and Organic), Physics, and the different branches of Biology (Biology, Anatomy, and Physiology).

In addition, I prepare students for standardized tests including the PSAT, GED, ASVAB, ACT, and SAT (all three parts – SAT Math, SAT Reading, and SAT Writing).

Finally, I tutor Social Science (American History, World History, Economics, Government & Politics, and Geography); English (English, Grammar, Literature, and Vocabulary); and introductory Spanish classes.

During the last 15 years, I have also mentored and tutored under-resourced students through an after-school program in Los Angeles. Furthermore, I have tutored homeless children through the School on Wheels organization and have volunteered as a tutor with my local Recreation Center. For each position, I have been fingerprinted and Live Scanned.

As a former AP Statistics student, I help students understand descriptive statistics (such as mean, median, standard deviation, least squares regression, and normal distributions) as well as statistical analysis (z-scores and z-tests, t-tests, confidence intervals, Chi-square tests, and ANOVA). I also cover planning and interpreting surveys, studies, and experiments; and probabilities of independent and dependent events. Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 provides the basic building blocks for all of the Math classes. I help students master these basic principles: linear equations and inequalities in 1 or 2 variables, absolute value, slope, slope-intercept form, polynomials, quadratic equations, exponents and radicals. Plus the dreaded word problems. I tutor both the high school and college variations. I am familiar with Math 31 at SMC.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

For some students, Algebra 2 marks the end of their high school career; for others, it's just a stepping stone to other higher Math classes; and for a third group, it's a refresher class at college. I help students navigate through factoring and FOILing, the Quadratic Formula, complex roots, imaginary numbers, matrices, exponents, logarithms, radicals, rational expressions, series & sequences, and conic sections (hyperbolas, ellipses, and circles). At the college level, I am familiar with Math 18 and Math 20 at SMC.
Calculus,

Calculus

I took a year of Calculus at college. I help students understand limits, finding derivatives of algebraic and trigonometric functions, the Chain Rule, antiderivatives, definite integrals, calculating areas and volumes of figures, and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. I am familiar with Math 7 at SMC.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

At UC Irvine, I took a year of General Chemistry (plus labs) and a year of Organic Chemistry (plus labs). I love helping both high school and college students discover and appreciate Chemistry - the order and structure of the Periodic Table, atomic structure, stoichiometry, acids and bases, thermochemistry, and nuclear chemistry.

Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I help students develop the skills and strong foundation in Math that they will need during their high school years and beyond. I cover the introduction to variables, factoring, inequalities, graphing, and absolute values.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I help Precalculus students develop the strong fundamentals of Math that they are going to need in Calculus. I review the six Trigonometric functions and their graphs, logarithms, and conic sections. I also cover complex numbers and polar coordinates. Finally, I preview limits and derivatives that will form the basis of Calculus. Since some classes combine Precalculus and Trigonometry, please also review my Trigonometry subject description. At the college level, I am familiar with Math 2 at SMC.

Excellent Tutor

Phillip was a perfect tutor for our son in high school. He was patient and very good at explaining things in just the right way to help my son understand the subject. He was flexible with my son's sport schedule, polite and caring. We couldn't have asked for a better tutor. Thanks for everything Phillip!

Great tutor, helped with everything I asked for.

Philip is very polite and punctual other than just being a really nice tutor for me. We have had success in understanding each other, he definitely knows how to find a way to explain hard topics. He’s provided significant effort in helping me pass my pre-calculus class, given that in the beginning of our sessions I was an absolute zero in math. So, I would recommend Philip to anyone who cares about their time and want to see results from tutor sessions. By the way, looking at the tutors market, I would say that the price Philip set for his sessions is more than fair, so for affordable price you get to learn from a person as professional as other people asking 150+$ an hour.

Calming and kind

My son Jack will continue to use Philip for the rest of the year and any time he needs help with Math/Science. Tutorials on graphing and use of the graphing calculator has made homework periods much more productive. My son likes him so I like him!!

Calming and kind

My son Jack takes Mathematics for Business & Social Sciences at a local community college. Finding simple and compound interest and then reviewing both the vertex and standard forms of quadratic equations and their graphs, helped my 17-year-old stay on course. Jack will continue to use Philip for the rest of the year and any time he needs help with math/Science. My son likes him so I like him.
