Qualifications for “Spanish”

Primary Grades Spanish: For several years, I taught Bilingual (Spanish) Kindergarten and First Grade. With young children, especially, I always emphasize creativity, active participation, music and movement. This kind of teaching engages children and is also supported by the latest brain research and I really love it, too!

Upper Elementary through High School Spanish: There is more emphasis on grammar, formal conversation, learning to read shorter text, write sentences and paragraphs and ultimately literature. There are still opportunities for engaging lessons as solely rote learning rarely leads to deep understanding or the desire to pursue learning throughout one's life.

Workplace/Introductory Spanish: I can offer instruction with vocabulary tailored for different workplace needs, i.e., retail, construction, custodial, some medical/nursing as well. Please contact me to discuss customized instruction.
Thank you.

I hold a California Professional Clear Teaching Credential (Retired), am Bilingual in Spanish and have more than 15 years' experience teaching and tutoring. Most of my classroom experience has been "self-contained"; that is to say, I taught my students in all subject areas: reading, writing, math, social studies, science, PE, etc. I emphasize developmentally-appropriate activities, with learning embedded in enjoyment and discovery for young children. It is also my experience that students of all ages learn more authentically and more fully retain what they have learned when multiple modalities of instruction are employed. For instance, 'hands-on' practice and not just 'pen and pencil' or memorization is supported by much brain research to enhance learning.

I offer experience with students with Special Needs, especially in the areas of Aspergers, Autistic and ADHD. I have participated in Early Literacy Training and employed such methods extensively with young children and English Learners. I am experienced at implementing Reading Specialist curriculum to support struggling 3rd - 5th grade students. For adult learners, I can offer professional support with conversational and workplace Spanish, ESL, test preparation and review of grammar skills.

As of June 2012, I am also a Certified Positive Discipline Parenting Educator. Steeped in Adlerian Psychology, this parenting method emphasizes "connection before correction," mutual respect and parenting that is Both 'kind And firm'. I'm happy to consult with parents who may want to learn more about Positive Discipline and ways in which it may help their family. Furthermore, I incorporate Positive Discipline with social skills for Autistic students. Thank you.
During the height of the pandemic, I privately taught Kindergarten employing all health and safety protocols.

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

I taught ESL (ELD English Language Development) for more than 12 years as a self-contained (all subjects) Bilingual classroom Teacher. Learning English was incorporated into all other subjects (math, science, social studies) as well as during a separate instructional time dedicated to phonemic awareness, phonics, grammar, etc. Recently, I assisted an adult student who is learning English with reading and writing, all focused upon the United States Citizenship Examination. She passed on the first try! I hold a California Professional Clear Teaching Credential.
Grammar,

Grammar

I am a firm believer in rescuing good grammar from becoming a "lost art." When one speaks and writes well, one distinguishes oneself as a literate, well-mannered person and rises above the sad, boorish cultural norm of "dumbing down." I often believe that people whose first language is other than English have a distinct advantage when studying grammar. The "Romance" languages with which I am acquainted employ much more sophisticated grammar and vocabulary than is often heard in daily use by North American speakers. I'd be pleased to assist anyone desiring to communicate with improved and proper grammar. Thank you.

Proofreading,

Proofreading

As a former Litigation Legal Secretary, my proofreading and grammar skills are excellent. I proofread and corrected many documents that were to be filed with the Court; errors were simply not tolerated in the large San Francisco firm where I worked. Additionally, all of my adult employment and graduate school studies have required me to synthesize and/or interpret complex source material and produce highly sophisticated essays and reports, etc. My proofreading and suggestions greatly enhanced several Grant applications and assisted organizations in successfully receiving the desired funding. For many years I have informally 'proofread' newspapers, etc.; I "just see" errors in spelling and syntax, etc. I look forward to assisting you with any of your writing tasks, including proofreading. Thank you.

There is almost nothing that surpasses the joy of reading! I love to help people, little children through adults, grow as readers. I say "grow as readers," not "learn to read" because we are all readers ~ just at different levels. Your preschooler who recognizes the "logo" or symbol for a favorite store or restaurant IS already reading. And the journey continues... I have considerable training in teaching students to "decode" sounds, phonics, develop fluency and build skills for comprehension. These are the "building blocks." Then comes the joy of reading widely and deeply. I'd be honored to help guide your journey or that of your child into the wonderful world of reading.

Dedicated tutor for my ADHD son

For many years, my ADHD son has been struggling with organization and getting work turned in on time. As a result, there was a lot of stress and frustration in the family in getting him to do his work. We needed to reset. Carol helped us do that by taking on the part of helping my son with his organization and following up on assignments. As a teacher/tutor, she is able to remove the family emotional stress from the equation. Carol cares about her students and goes the extra mile. I definitely recommend Carol for anyone looking for a tutor.

Patient and creative tutor

Carole has a great rapport with my daughter after just one session. I appreciate her style of teaching that will match my daughter's moods and interests. I hope to make this tutoring a regular session with my home schooler.

Very friendly and patient tutor

Carole gave English class to my mother over a course of 2 months. My mother is a native Chinese Mandarin speaker and spoke very little English when they started the lessons, therefore it was a challenge for both them to get to understand each other. At the beginning, I discussed a few ideas with Carole on how she could help improve my mother's English, especially speaking and listening skills. Carole was very open for suggestions and also came up with creative ways of tutoring to go beyond the language barrier. She was always very patient and friendly. I noticed that my mother gradually became more confident in speaking English and also improved her pronunciation. I would like to thank Carole on behalf of my mother for her attentive and patient tutoring in the past months. Thank you!

Great general tutor (especially Spanish and English)

We originally hired Carol to tutor our son for his high school Spanish classes. She has been great working with our son. She also helps him organize all his homework and go over all his assignments, and prioritize what work he needs to complete. She is also great for English writing and reviewing essays. Thanks, Carole, for all your help!

Great tutor! We just needed her every day!

I think Carole did a wonderful job with our son. The problem is, we need someone to follow him around until he gets used to the routine! I wish we could have had her here daily, she's great!
