When I began tutoring a few years ago, I firmly believed that anyone could do well in mathematics, all the way through Calculus, provided you are relatively fluent in a few formulas and make time for regular problem sets. My experience over that time has only confirmed my suspicions, and its has been a great pleasure to work with many of my students. I have always found joy in getting to the point of a big concept and keeping the focus on the purposeful real-world applications that many of my students' math problems lead to. I think that is why I have been so successful at connecting with a variety of students, and why they have enjoyed working with me. We all agree that math can become boring, but that it really does not have to be.

There are no boring subjects, only boring people. I finished a Master's in Statistics two years ago at CSUEB and work on Finance research and Data Science projects when not tutoring. They are very exciting spaces to be in right now due the new explosive capabilities in stats online and allow for an enormous amount of new discovery. Having previously been an honor student in math, I had to do my fair share of brushing up when going back to school, but still did exceptionally well. Compound that with being an ADHD student my entire academic career, and I feel I have a human element to me that makes me a very understanding academic coach. I have now had success working with students in middle school, high school, and college students. I have also worked with older students returning to school after years away. I have worked with top level advanced students seeking a deeper understanding as well as struggling and ADHD students. As an ADHD myself, I am personally very passionate about working with this group. I have developed several behavioral skillsets that work great for us ADHD creative geniuses. ADHD is not a learning disorder. When not acknowledged, it can definitely hold you back, but once you are conscious of how it affects your short term learning processes, i

ADHD

I have focused my tutoring practice on ADHD students for the past 3 years, and it is currently about 60% of my regular students. I myself am an academically successful ADHD student and this is a very passionate and personal area for me. I know what it is like to struggle, and I know all the series of paths that students need to take to succeed. Years ago, I began working with Sarkis Family Psychiatry who have been leaders in teaching people what it really means to be ADHD and how to be conscious of it. They have written many best selling books and many of their methods do not require medication. ADHD is no disorder at all, merely a different way of learning/thinking. If not focused on, it can definitely hold a student back, but once unlocked its a great asset. I help students build simple, consistent routines. I teach them to pace study sessions to maximize focus. I also point out just how creative and visual they are and how that is an enormous asset. This all leads to increased consistency and confidence. 80% of my ADHD students see significant improvement in school performance.

Dedicated, knowledgeable and patient tutor with terrific parental customer service too!

Charles has been a wonderful match for our 2E, 9th-grade son. Our son is 3-years above grade level in math, but due to ADHD-inattentive type, he does not have the best study habits and/or makes careless mistakes in math and other work. These issues were reflected in some uneven grades in the first semester of high school, so we had to scramble to find our son some support. Charles's extensive experience in working with neuro-diverse students have been invaluable. He is knowledgeable about the common errors and poor work habits that may trip up the student, and has been extremely proactive in reviewing our son's past and current assignments to look for opportunities and make concrete recommendations to improve work habits and build confidence in the students ability to leverage applied techniques into improved grades. many of the techniques apply to math, as well as other subjects such as humanities and foreign language, and our son's grades have improved quickly in the second semester. Our son has build great rapport with Charles and he is much more open to trying study suggestions from Charles (than from us parents) because he has seen RESULTS in higher grades. This past week, he did not even protest or push back when Charles suggested that an "A-grade" essay may require at least 4 - 5 drafts/input from others, as well as personal reviews. Prior to working with Charles, he would do maybe 1 revision to the initial draft, and be fine with turning the assignment. From Friday through Sunday, he has already made 3 sets of revisions, and will meet with his Humanities teacher for office hours next week for another round of review and revision. Charles is teaching our son long-term study skills, which we see as a valuable investment and for which we are most appreciative.

Great investment for college-level math students with ADHD or Asperger / learning disabilities.

I am a college student with Asperger Syndrome and ADHD. For several days I was trying to study logarithms (topic) on my own, with textbooks and YouTube videos, and with the peer tutors provided by the university. But it still didn't make any sense. I spent 45 minutes working with Charles and he was able to find the root cause of the problem and address it. He told me that a logarithm is a PROCEDURE... and everything made a lot more sense after that. I was confused about "what a logarithm is?" I was mistaking it for some kind of weird notation or symbol. (like a degree symbol) Once I understood that "to take a logarithm" is a PROCEDURE just like "multiplication"... everything else that I was trying to learn from the textbook made a lot more sense! I am very happy with my choice. My time with Charles was a great investment and I understand all topics related to logarithms a lot better now. It is pretty rare to find someone who specializes on Math remediation at the college level and is proficient in helping students with special needs. I would recommend Charles, especially when you already tried everything else.

Friendly and helpful

We’ve only had 2 lessons so far. He does a good job explaining things to my daughter and making sure that she understands it. (She really hates math.) Hopefully this will be turning point for her. He is patient and friendly while being simplistic which she appreciates,

Excellent At Analyzing Root of Problems

We just had our second session with Charles and I'm even more impressed with his easy-going manner, his initiative to come up with lesson material at the end of summer/before school has started, and most importantly discovering where my son is getting hung up with his understanding of math concepts. Thanks so much Charles!

Learned a lot!

We went over Linear/nonlinear convergent divergent series and infinite sums etc... Equations of circles parabolas and hyperabolas. Note, Charles is very good at explaining things like asymptotes for rational function, helps you visualize where they would be on a graph without needing to see the graph, and how to identify common mistakes people make, not just for the previously mentioned but for pretty much anything.

Very patient tutor

My 12 year old son has been working with Charles for a few months now learning how to organize his thoughts and create high quality work in writing and math. Our son enjoys working with Charles and has incorporated a lot of his suggestions into his work. His writing has improved and his math work has become more organized and easier to follow.

Great tutor for my middle school son

We are really enjoying and impressed with the relationship Charles and our son are developing. Charles has a unique way of empowering our son to want to do his best and do it the "smart" way. Charles has given him tricks on how to study for tests and how to check his work. The tricks are practical and easy for him to understand and practice. Charles has a unique way of talking to both of our sons, in a way that is not intimidating but engaging. They want to talk to Charles about what they are studying and tell him how they are doing in school. We are really grateful that Charles is helping our son.
