Qualifications for “logic”

I have a BS degree in Math from Michigan State U, a Master's in Computer Systems from Air Force Institute of Technology, and completed PhD coursework in Geophysics at U.C. Berkeley.

Although I haven't taught any students in Logic, my years as a computer programmer for the US Air Force made me amply familiar with the vagaries of logic (and how easy it was to get it wrong). At one point, I programmed database selection logic using an easy for the user to understand method I invented myself, rather than using the common Polish select notation. At other times, I helped users build email sieves to select all the incoming mail that they needed to see, while screening out the rest.

When I retired from the United States Air Force I swore I would never get up early again. But I still wanted to do something to continue making the world a better place. So I turned to something I had done for my friends in High School, my troops in the field, and my neighborhood kids, TUTORING! I have been doing it professionally now for over ten years. I love it when my student's understand a new concept. Their eyes light up, they smile at me and say, "but that's easy!"

Most students who come to me have been having trouble for a long time, but managed to get by. My first goal is to help them with their current difficulties and homework. But then I take them back to the beginning, find out what they missed learning, and correct that. Math is like building a brick wall, each layer relies on a solid foundation. If you didn't learn fractions or the multiplication table, you're never going to get through Algebra. But by filling in the knowledge gaps, then each new concept is just a small, logical step...and Math becomes not just easy, but fun. And upon request, I can give the names of many of my students who have said just that!

Approved Subjects

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is one of my favorite classes. At the very beginning, I can get students understanding what I call "the secret of Algebra", which will carry them all the way through Calculus.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have found that kids having trouble with Algebra 2 usually didn't understand Algebra 1, but managed to 'get through'. I am always able to figure out where they are weak, and build up their basic skills.
Geometry,

Geometry

Geometry is one of my favorite subjects. As I tell the students: they draw you a picture. That helps them be less afraid. And as we work some problems that require a little arithmetic, I'm able to help them build up their basic capabilities , the lack of which, has been holding them back.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I love to help young kids with their basic skills, before they become afraid of MATH and feel like failures, including in Prealgebra.

I have a BS degree in Math from Michigan State U, a Master's in Computer Systems from Ais Force Institute of Technology, and completed PhD coursework in Geophysics at U.C. Berkeley. I have tutored two students so far in Basic Calculus including differential equations and Integration. My basic method was to make sure they understood what differentiation and integration were and how they worked before moving on to using all the shortcuts.

More than a teaching professional

It is very hard to write a review about Nadine because it is hard to describe how much more she is than just a tutor or a teacher. First of all, Nadine is easy to reach by phone. Scheduling a tutoring session last minute has never been a problem. It is almost as if she knew the student's grade will depend on it. You can tell right away that Nadine has had a lot of experience teaching individuals who have a difficult time grasping math. For my boyfriend, he found math to be intimidating and he did not have any confidence in himself. He had problems completing problems during tests because he just drew a blank. Nadine has the patience to help the student build the blocks of understanding and develop the ability to solve more complex problems. She can recognize gaps of understanding, and she fills those gaps like the way workers repair a strip of road that is heavily used during commute hours. Without Nadine's help, I think my boyfriend would still be struggling with math. She helped remove whatever fear he had about taking tests and restored his faith in himself. Nadine is a wonderful, caring human being who knows what is at stake. Intermediate Algebra was the one class that kept my boyfriend from graduating. The semester is not yet over, but he is in very good shape because of his sessions with Nadine. He has a much more positive outlook on everything beyond passing a math class.

She knows what to do and how to do it!

Nadine understood what my son was grappling with and found a way to make it clear. I'll would recommend her services to anyone that has a child that has a struggle with mathematics.

Excellent, very comfortable

Nadine, is a great teacher and person, she makes your children feel very comfortable. My daughter was very nervous at first but by the end of the lesson she was excited about learning. Nadine is taking my daughter back to basics to find the problem and build her skills back up she instills confidence in them in such a short time. I am glad we found her!

First lesson Geometry

My kid and I both liked her. She demonstrates enthusiasm and knowledge in math and teaching. She helped my daughter the first lesson. We arranged a second lesson. Thanks Nadine.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor.

Nadine helped my son to understand the reasons why he is struggling with calculus (i.e. missing/unlearned steps in solving problems). She began to re-teach the missing information and improved his confidence and understanding.

Math algebra

My experience with Nadine. The first hour was spend talking and answering her questions about algebra instead of reviewing my homework that I had brought with me. I wanted to discuss the process where I was having problems BUT Nadine insist on me answering her questions for the first hour. The first hour of my $40.00 was spend answering her questions and the 2nd hour was spent working on 3 problems and the rest of my homework Nadine wasn't interested in reviewing and didn't. I am on a budget and spend my hard earned money in hopes to get some questions answers and/or note to guide me with my sticking places in the operations which never happened. $80.00 spend in vain.

Knowledgable tutor

Nadine help me understand integration. Also, I like her tutoring better than just go to a school tutor because its a one to one type of experience, I can tell her what I knew and understood about the lesson and what needs to be reinforce. Thanks.
