Qualifications for “Math”

As students progress in math from the basics into preparation for algebra, they need to begin thinking of numbers in more abstract ways. They need to understand different kinds of fractions and negative numbers, which we don’t see around us in our everyday world. They need to think of addition and multiplication in new and more advanced ways.
I show my students how these concepts relate to the world they know and how they can easily understand them. One of my students was recently hopelessly confused by integers, and after one tutoring session, she understood them and was suddenly getting over 90% of her homework correct. (And we spent half of that tutoring session on reading!)
I firmly believe that every individual can, with the right help and explanation, become expert in math. I am an Arizona certified elementary and high school teacher with over 15 years experience teaching all levels of math.

About Maurice

Bio

And one of my ASU students came back to me for help in four different math courses and earned the grades he wanted in all of them. I have a deep understanding of how most students can excel...

I have taught small groups and individuals for over 20 years, both in school settings and in students' homes or at neutral locations like coffee shops and bookstores. The first three questions I ask myself are "How does this person learn best? What is his or her learning style? How can I help this person learn more effectively?"

I have a Master's degree in Special Education from the Johns Hopkins University (in Baltimore, MD), and a current teaching certificate from the State of Arizona, which qualifies me to teach in both elementary schools and high schools. I also have special qualifications on my teaching certificate to teach math and reading.

I am a highly skilled tutor for students ranging from special education children in public elementary school to middle and high school students in private schools like BASIS and Tesseract, all the way up to college students in ASU. In fact, I have recently worked with a 4th grade student who improved so much that he lost his special education status. One of my high school students is now close to a solid B-student in 10th grade, after having failed his entire freshman year. And one of my ASU students came back to me for help in four different math courses and earned the grades he wanted in all of them.

I have a deep understanding of how most students can excel in reading (both decoding and comprehension), math (from elementary math all the way up to calculus and statistics) and writing, including both basic writing and advanced composition. I have also helped students master social studies and sciences by teaching them effective study skills and techniques that enable them to learn and retain the information efficiently and effectively.

With this flexibility, I go beyond the initial reason for your tutoring request to help you with those other academic challenges that come up that wouldn't necessarily have been important enough for you to hire a tutor.

Over the years I have been asked many times "What do you teach?" My answer has always been "Students." I don't see myself as teaching a specific subject, but rather I consider myself responsible for my student's entire academic progress. I am not satisfied that I have done my job until my student is able to succeed in all of his or her studies completely independently, using the study skills, memorization techniques, and test-taking abilities that I have helped them develop.

I am willing to be flexible with the timing of sessions, adding "emergency" time for those important tests or assignments, providing my schedule allows it. I do prefer at least 6 hours notice of cancellations, and will still charge for a late cancellation unless there are particularly extenuating circumstances.

I am always excited to meet new students and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

When students are beginning their math career it is essential that they quickly become comfortable with the basic concepts so they don’t have the opportunity to develop fear of math. To this end, I have developed many effective techniques to help them understand numbers in an easy non-threatening way. I show them the basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in ways that make sense to them, and give them fun activities to practice their skills. One of the prime failures of math teaching is that children don’t become expert with their math facts such as the dreaded times tables. I have a method of teaching times tables that quickly improves students’ mastery without the drudgery of endless oral repetition and flashcards. When students become confused by graphs, I have easy methods using color coding and other tools that help them swiftly improve their proficiency. Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra I is the basis for all higher math. This is where the concepts begin to get really abstract and it is very important to be able to find ways to visualize what is happening. If one can create a picture of what is happening in one’s mind, one can then remember the concepts and apply them to the situations which will be used in geometry and onwards. One of the ways I help students with this is by having them use what I call a ‘trivial example’, which is an example of the rule which is so easy that I can’t get it wrong! This can help a student check the correct method even in a high-stress exam. There has to be a better way of learning than trying to remember lists of formulas… and I can almost always find it. One of my high school students used to be really scared of math… and he earned an F. This year, he is passing, and he just asked me for some extra problems so that he could practice a concept to be sure he had it clear for his next test. I don’t have to remind him of material from earlier in the year anymore, because he remembers it himself. I firmly believe that every individual can, with the right help and explanation, become expert in math. I am an Arizona certified elementary and high school teacher with over 15 years experience teaching all levels of math.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is the course where math becomes really abstract, where we start considering ideas like logarithms and imaginary numbers. Historically, some of these concepts met strong resistance from many creative and thoughtful mathematicians because they are very difficult to relate to the real world. I have clear and comprehensible ways of explaining these concepts so that they become easy to retain and apply to real-world problems. I have practical and useful strategies that will help you remember how to solve problems even in high-stress testing situations. I am a certified AZ teacher with a math endorsement for high-school math.

With the use of appropriate and effective visualizations of the more abstract concepts, I boost my students’ memory of the ideas and formulas that they need to solve problems. I provide simple and effective tools to improve recall of difficult equations even in stressful testing situations. I am an AZ certified teacher with over 15 years experience in the sciences.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

As students progress in math from the basics into preparation for algebra, they need to begin thinking of numbers in more abstract ways. They need to understand different kinds of fractions and negative numbers, which we don’t see around us in our everyday world. They need to think of addition and multiplication in new and more advanced ways. I show my students how these concepts relate to the world they know and how they can easily understand them. One of my students was recently hopelessly confused by integers, and after one tutoring session, she understood them and was suddenly getting over 90% of her homework correct. (And we spent half of that tutoring session on reading!) I firmly believe that every individual can, with the right help and explanation, become expert in math. I am an Arizona certified elementary and high school teacher with over 15 years experience teaching all levels of math.

Precalculus

I have taught math at all levels up to calculus and am strongly aware of the interconnections between the different skills that are involved in math. I have a particular ability to analyze my students' performance to determine the particular skill deficits that are the crux of their difficulties. By focusing on the concepts that challenge each individual student I am able to significantly improve his or her performance and confidence in a short time. I also aim to teach my students the habit of understanding math and becoming comfortable and confident mathematicians.
Probability,

Probability

The study of probability began as a way to help people win at gambling, but it has become much more than that. It underlies the science of statistics which affects all aspects of our daily lives, from medical treatments to politics, from education to travel, and much more. Knowing the history and uses of probability enables me to explain the concepts in everyday terms that make sense to ordinary people.

Almost every math question on the SAT has a quick, easy way to solve it... if you can find it. Sometimes it is as simple as noticing a hidden multiplication fact, or an algebra rule, or a trigonometric ratio. I can show you what to look for and how to find the correct responses fast enough to finish the test in the time. As an AZ certified high school math teacher, I can help you develop strategies to boost your score on the SAT. I am also qualified as a reading specialist, so I can help with the reading and writing portions as well.

I have a Master's degree in Special Education from the Johns Hopkins University (in Baltimore, MD) and a current teaching certificate from the State of AZ which allows me to teach all subjects in both elementary schools and high schools, with special mentions of math and reading. I am highly skilled at pinpointing the exact skills which challenge each student and will tailor my instruction for those particular skills and for the student's individual learning style. I make sure that my students recognize the progress they are making so that they become excited to learn more. And I help them understand their own strengths and preferences so that they can learn more effectively in the future. Besides the core subjects, I am also able to help my students in the sciences and social studies. When asked what I teach, I always answer, "Students," because I consider the whole student my responsibility. I don't think my job is done until my student is able to succeed in all his or her academic studies completely independently.

Maurice is great!

Maurice has been helping me with the last few weeks of this math class I have been taking. It's been 15 years since I took a Math class and I was struggling with some of the concepts. He did a great job of breaking down the material to help me understand it, not only the math pieces, but how to do it in excel which is part of my assignments.
