Hello,

I am passionate about helping students of all ages to learn and be successful. I like learning, and I want to pass my enthusiasm for learning onto my students to help them in reading, math, writing or learning English as a Second Language. My goal is to find what my students are interested in and use their interests as a springboard to their learning.

I tutor students of all ages. My bachelor's and master's degrees are in Elementary Education from Indiana University. I graduated with a second masters in Teaching English as Second Language (ESL) from The University of Findlay. I know the importance of finding a tutor to help your children or yourself. I have tutored students in a variety of subjects including ESL and worked with students face to face or online from around the world including Brazil, China, El Salvador, Mexico, India, and Thailand.

Students like my calm nature, patience, and passion to help them succeed. Parents tell me they can see I care for their child. It is my goal in tutoring to make each session interesting, so the student enjoys our sessions. I use a variety of activities that are planned to meet the needs of each student.

I am looking forward to working with you or your child.

Elementary (K-6th)

My bachelor's and master's degrees are in Elementary Education and I hold an Arkansas teaching license. I have over 15 years of classroom teaching and tutoring experience. My tutoring methods include using worksheets, games, task cards, and manipulatives to teach and reinforce lessons. My goal is to make the tutoring session enjoyable, so the students see being tutored as a positive experience and not negative. Tutoring helps to improve a student's self-confidence in school subjects.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I am tutoring a sixth grader in elementary math.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

Teaching English as a second language is an enjoyable experience for me. I like to help students of all ages (K-adult) learn English. Anyone who studies a language needs to develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, so my lessons include these four skills. I also include information about the American culture to help students adjust to life here in the United States.
Homeschool

Homeschool

My teaching certification allows me to teach/tutor homeschool students. I am supportive of families who choose to homeschool. I am familiar with some of the educational curriculums available for homeschooling.
Literature

Literature

I enjoy reading and teaching literature. We learn about ourselves, others and the world through reading great works. Schools expect students to connect with a text by asking themselves how does this text connect with me (text to text connection)? Have I read another work like this text (text to text connection)? In our world what do I see that reminds me of this text (text to world)?
Phonics

Phonics

My bachelor's degree is in Elementary Education with a minor in reading. I studied phonics for my minor and again for TESOL master's. Currently, I use phonics in teaching English Language Learners at a community college. I believe the use of phonics is important in both reading and learning English.
Reading

Reading

I am a current English for Bilingual Students, a Reading and Writing Instructor at Northwest Arkansas Community College. I have developed a Nonprofit Tutoring Center for Reading and Mathematics in Ohio. I have private Tutoring Experience in Reading. I am a former Title I Reading Teacher, a former 4th Grade Teacher. I have a B.S. & M.S. in Education M.A., TESOL Education.
TOEFL

TOEFL

My master's degree in teaching English as a second language prepared me to help students study for the TOEFL. I have also worked with students from China, India, and China to prepare for the TOEFL. In studying for the TOEFL, ESL students and I work on the four areas of the test: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
World History

World History

I believe we can learn a lot from the history of our nation and the world. The history of any country is much more than memorizing dates and names. Studying history helps us understand current events. I enjoy helping students understand history.

Thank you for taking the time to provide written feedback for me. It is a joy to work with your son because I never know what questions he will ask me. Both of us are curious and have a thirst for knowledge which makes working with him so much fun.

Patient and Kind!

Karen worked with my daughter for almost two years. In that time she developed into a much stronger reader and was always looking forward to the time they spent together! We will always be grateful for the lessons she taught her. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

A Year Later

It's been a year since we started our boys with our tutor Karen. We are so happy with the progress she has made with our sons. They have been homeschooled for several years, and are now re-entering public school. We have seen an enormous improvement in both of our sons. Karen is extremely patient with them. She gives constant positive reinforcement. She keeps the boys actively involved by asking them follow up questions to ensure that they understand the material. She has been helping them understand how to identify their own mistakes and find ways to fix them. She has taught them skills to help them long-term. We can see through her teaching method, that she is genuinely eager to see them succeed. We wish we had found her years ago! We are continuing with her tutoring sessions throughout

Knowledgeable and patient tutor for my 8 year old.

I am so thankful I found Karen. I was looking for someone who has experience with teaching young children and who felt comfortable teaching online. She is very patient and has a nice caring demeanor and my son absolutely loves her! She is willing to work with him long term which is wonderful for us. She gives us homework each week so Seth can build on skills he needs help with. I highly recommend her and hope we have the privilege of working with her for a long time to come. Thank you Karen!
