My tutoring style emphasizes practice and reiteration of information and skills to enhance learning. I was diagnosed with ADHD at age four and have spent my life learning ways of getting myself to focus, concentrate, and learn. Because of this, I am very good at getting others to focus on the information that is truly important. I also emphasize study skills by teaching students how to organize their studying and the information they must learn in order to make things easier for them. I am laid back and flexible, but firm, and ask students a lot of questions to get them to think through to the best answer on their own. I use a lot of positive reinforcement and try to create a visual and environmental motivational space in which to work to help the student focus on the task at hand.
I have tutored several students in Algebra 1. I have numerous lessons plans already prepared and only need to be given the topics you need help with to tailor the session to help you most effectively. As a scientist I have used algebra on a regular basis and can help you or your child brush up on their skills. I am best suited to prealgebra or algebra 1. Algebra 2 is not my strong suit, but I am willing to try if you feel strongly I am the fit for you.
I have a masters in zoology. I was a senior teaching assistant for a 100 level university zoology course, and a junior teaching assistant for a 200 level animal biology course for one year. As a senior TA I ran laboratory sessions for 96 students. My strengths in biology lie in the animal and aquatic sciences. I do not have a strong background in cell or molecular biology although I have taken these courses. I would be a great tutor for high school biology students and college level introductory biology, ecology, or zoology courses. Feel free to get in touch and let me know what specific class you need help with and I'll let you know if I can help.
I have a solid background in the sciences. I have tutored one student in college level introductory chemistry for science majors. I would be appropriate for tutoring high school and beginning college chemistry.
I have extensive experience using basic computer programs for 30 years. I previously taught college computer center courses in Word, Excel, and Endnote. I am familiar with a lot of extended features of the MSOffice Suite and have familiarity in a variety of science based software such as distance, noremark, ranges, and minitab. I can teach you the basics of using the internet, Facebook, email, wordprocessing, and using spreadsheets.
I have a masters in zoology and a bachelors in geology and natural sciences. I have worked as a wildlife biologist for eight years and encounter ecological issues and principles on a daily basis. I have taken multiple courses that encompass ecology and have experience as an introductory biology TA and the university level.
I have two degrees in science and have held several jobs that introduce science to kids both in the classroom and on field trips. I have also been a park ranger for a number of years and am accustomed to talking about science with people that may not have any scientific background. This has required me to focus on simple explanations that I can easily convey to your child.
My liberal arts education strongly emphasized writing skills. We even wrote essays for calculus exams! I have a solid foundation in how to write and how to craft persuasive arguments for essays. I have also written two novels and have one scientific article published in a peer-reviewed journal. If you have an English assignment, I can probably help you.
I tutored ESL students in english, biology, and math when I was in high school. I have lived overseas and am sensitive to cultural differences and customs. I also understand how it is to be in a foreign land and have difficulty communicating. I have excellent writing, spelling, and grammar skills and the type of personality that enjoys teaching and helping others. I have also learned a lot about grammatical structure from the six years of french I took while in high school and college. I believe tutoring ESL students is the same as tutoring other students but just requires more patience and a desire to go at the student's pace.
I studied French for six years while I was in school. That might seem like too long ago to remember, but I had a very demanding teacher that I am forever indebted to for teaching me something that stuck and was fun and useful. I enjoy tutoring French because it keeps the language current in my head. I can assist with pronunciation, accent, conversational skills, and grammar. I would consider myself fairly fluent, but I am not a native speaker and my grammar gets a bit fuzzy when it comes to more advanced French. I am most suited to teaching introductory to intermediate French.
I have been working on personal computers for 25 years starting with WordStar and DOS. I am proficient in Microsoft Office. I have presented numerous presentations for school and professional groups using Powerpoint. I was an instructor in Excel, Word, and EndNote during graduate school for the Information Technology Department at University of Otago. I can install software and set up DSL and internet on computers with limited assistance. I am the one in the office that people come to when they have a problem with their computer. I can teach people the basics of how to use a computer.
I got my bachelor's in geology and am completely rock obsessed. The only major geology course I didn't take was structural. It's been a long time since my geology days, but I could easily tutor for an introductory course and things like glacial, sedimentary, oceanography, and volcanology. If you require tutoring for upper division courses I would recommend contacting me with the topics and I'll let you know if it's something I think I can help with. If you're a high school earth science student, I can definitely help you!
I have worked with Excel and Word for 20 years. I have some familiarity with QuickBooks. I used to teach courses in Word and Excel to students at my university computer center. I know a lot of shortcuts that can save time.
I have four degrees in different sciences. As an undergraduate I studied geology and biology which included introductory series courses in chemistry and physics. I also got my masters in wildlife management, so I am well equipped to help students with biology and geology and junior high or 9th grade, chemistry and physics.
I have tutored several young students in pre-algebra and algebra. These are some of my strongest subjects, and the kind of math I use most frequently in my everday career.
I have significant experience helping others edit and proofread their papers and essays. I have helped several friends (both native and non-native speakers) with college admissions essays. I have exceptional attention to detail when it comes to writing and will find all your typos!
I have worked for the National Park Service as an Interpretation ranger for 5 years. This involves developing your own interactive presentations for groups of visitors up to 100 people. I was an environmental education intern where I did weekly presentations in classrooms to junior high school kids. I have also been an education volunteer for aquariums and zoos. I can be an objective voice that will give you useful feedback on your own public speaking ability and give you strategies for being an effective and confident presenter.
I started playing soccer when I was 5. I have about 20 years of continuous experience. I played for a division 3 team in college and on a club team overseas in grad school. I made the all star team for AYSO several times for my goalkeeping skills as a kid, and have also gone to several intensive camps for goalkeeping. I would be a good coach for someone looking to get some practice in on the field or develop specific skills. I would also be a good coach for someone in high school or below who wants to take their goalkeeping skills up a notch. If you or your child's skills are above mine and I can't help you, I'll tell you and not waste your time.
I used SPSS for my master's work which involved a lot of ANOVAs, t-tests, and linear regressions. The version I used would be a bit out-dated by now, but I'm still very familiar with statistical computer programs and can help you figure out how to use the program.
I have gotten As in the two statistics courses I have taken. I have tutored two students through online statistics courses, and an additionally two MBA students through business statistics using MSExcel.
My masters thesis was essentially a statistical exercise. I calibrated mark-recapture estimates with total counts of New Zealand fur seal pups. This involved doing a lot of ANOVAS and GLM regressions. I became proficient at Minitab and SPSS software. I would be capable of tutoring introductory statistics for science and non-science majors.
I was diagnosed with ADD when I was 4 so I have spent my life trying to figure out ways to get and keep me motivated and focussed while learning. I emphasize techniques for organizing work during my tutoring sessions. For example, I would require a student to have written assignments down, to have a calendar with assignments and tests plotted out. I would encourage them to have an organized notebook and workspace. During tutoring I encourage repition and ways of helping learn information, like flashcards, writing things out repeatedly, and verbal repetition as well as trying to come up with pnemonics.
I swam competitvely for 10 years in high school and college, and then for a masters team after college. I specialized in butterfly and freestyle swimming all the distances in these two strokes. I had an exceptional coach in college who emphasized stroke technique. I also had shoulder problems due to poor technique and have spent years refining my own strokes to prevent injury. I took Water Safety Instructor training in 1999 with my college coach as the instructor. I taught swim lessons for 8 years at the local Y. I taught all levels from age 3 to 60. I specialized in adults and children that had difficulty in mainstream classes. My job was to work with them and get them back to a level where they could function in a mainstream class without disrupting other students. I have experience with lots of ADD and autistic students and would often have an entire class composed of just these kids when other instructors could not cope with just one different child in their class. They would generally be ready for a mainstream class after one 6 week session of 1/2 hour twice a week with me. I do not generally teach infant classes, but I could teach parents how to teach their kids how to swim. I was a masters swim team coach for a little over a year before I left for grad school. The team disbanded after I left. I am an excellent swim instructor.
I have excellent training in English and writing. I have written two novels that I am currently attempting to publish. I have extensive experience editing college and high school essays and have helped several friends (both native and non-native speakers) with college admission essays. I also have a peer-reviewed scientific paper published and am familiar with the submission process for scientific journals. If you need someone to edit your paper or give you feedback, I'm your girl.
I have a masters in zoology. I was a senior teaching assistant for a 100 level university zoology course, and a junior teaching assistant for a 200 level zoology course for one year. As a senior TA I ran laboratory sessions for 96 students. My resume will show you the extent of my education in zoology. I have also worked as a wildlife biotechnician for six years after completing my masters in the zoology department of University of Otago. My knowledge of zoology is much better than my background in cell biology and molecular studies. I have experience to back up the education. I am comfortable tutoring in all levels of zoology and animal science.
