Hello, I’m Michael, a tenured full professor with a PhD and more than 20 years of experience teaching and tutoring writing. I have taught at UC San Diego, the University of San Diego, San Diego State University, and Palomar College. I have worked with students from middle and high school through college and graduate school.
I received formal training in writing pedagogy at San Diego State University and Revelle College at UC San Diego. I am also a professional writer and editor with experience writing for major online publications. My scholarly work includes peer-reviewed articles, academic book chapters, and encyclopedia entries, and I have presented research at major academic conferences, including MLA and MESA. I have also served as a peer reviewer for academic publications.
My experience extends beyond academic essays. I have helped students successfully revise college and graduate-school applications, fellowship applications, financial-aid appeals, job materials, research papers, and other high-stakes writing. I can also tutor literature and literary analysis at a wide range of levels. I earned a 6/6 on the GRE Analytical Writing section and scored in the 92nd percentile on GRE Verbal.
Many students come to me believing they are simply “bad at writing.” I disagree. Strong writing is a skill that can be learned when it is taught clearly. I break the process into practical, manageable steps and help students improve organization, argument, clarity, grammar, style, research, revision, and their individual voice.
My goal is not just to improve one assignment, but to help you become a more confident and independent writer. I meet students at their current level and teach strategies they can continue using long after our session ends.
