I am person who later in life, returned to college to get a teaching certificate. I finished all the requirements this spring, and my teaching certificate came in June 2011. I have worked as a substitute teacher part time for a couple of years. That helped me to realize that I enjoy learning and helping others learn. Years ago I tutored one adult who was completing high school through Adult Education, and I have tutored elementary age students in improving their reading skills.

I try to focus on being encouraging in what people already know, along with helping them to learn more. I believe that education involves learning information, along with learning how to use that information in practical ways. Learning should involve maturing in all areas of life.I have learned to deal with and overcome difficulties in my life, and want to help others know that they can get better/smarter.

My best subjects are the social sciences, but I can also help with reading/writing skills, and math up through algebra. Learning should be fun and I am willing to try creative approaches to make it successful.

If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have tutored adults in math and enjoy math up through algebra.

Chess

I have played chess for many years. It is a good game to learn strategy. It is a good game to practice decision making. I will work with beginners or middle level players.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have done tutoring with a number of elementary students in a variety of subjects. Helping young ones get confident in school is important to me. I'm also a certified teacher in Special Education in Michigan, so I'm aware of various learning strategies.

ESL/ESOL

English is my native language. I also am a certified teacher, so I'm aware of various strategies to use when teaching. I understand language structure, vocabulary and spelling. I realize that knowing our alphabet and the sounds of letters is necessary for reading, especially for those not used to our alphabet. I am also interested in getting to know people from other parts of the world and helping them adapt to America.

GED

I passed the GED requirement test that WyzAnt requires with a 90% rate. I worked for over a year with adult GED students.

Social Studies

I am a certified teacher in Michigan. One of my endorsements is in social studies. I have enjoyed social studies all my life, and enjoy showing how all the aspects of this discipline fit together to understand our modern world.

Special Needs

I am a certified special education teacher. I have worked with special needs folks and know they have abilities, but just need the right support and proper strategies. I have learned many skills and strategies through my educational training and experience.

Study Skills

I have much experience as a student, including recent education to become a certified teacher in Michigan. Also, by tutoring folks and student teaching I have learned how to help students organize their notes, vocabulary lists, etc. to achieve their maximum potential.
