I am passionate about teaching! I find out what a student's learning style is (which includes audio, visual, kinesthetic, intuitive, experiential, or a combination of these) so that we can be efficient with our time together and so the student learns in a comfortable yet challenging environment. I've taught ESL at all levels, from an elementary bi-lingual (Spanish/English) classroom to college grad students. I specialize in reading, writing and pronunciation. In the area of English writing and critical thinking, I offer 20 years of experience teaching at the college level--including persuasive argument essays, research papers (MLA and APA formatting), and articles. I have written curricula for online classes in the areas of English Composition and narrative storytelling. I have been studying photography for over 15 years, piano for 30 years, and fiddle for 6 years and am proficient at all. I write and speak Spanish and German. I have a MA in Psychology, specializing in the study of archetypes, cross-cultural mythologies, dream work and art. I offer a practical approach combined with elements of creativity to stimulate the left and right sides of the brain to ensure that the student learns while having fun.

ADD/ADHD

I have worked with children and adults diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, both in a counseling setting (in college) and in a teaching capacity. I work with behaviors to help the student break the focus time down into smaller chunks (using a timer) and slowly increasing that time. There are rewards (these vary depending on the age, but a point system works well)for increasing the focus time.

Study Skills

I have been teaching study skills for over 15 years to students of all grade levels, but more specifically to college students who have learning challenges, such as ADD, ADHD, and general time management issues. I was the Director of the Resource Center at the Academy of Art College, where I managed a team of 20 coaches to help students who were having difficulties succeeding in their academic classes due to various challenges, including the ability to focus, organize, break larger projects into smaller chunks, and communicate with instructors to make sure they were on track. First on the needs assessment for a student needing help with study skills is determining what kind of learner they are through a simple questioning process; next, is to teach them how to advocate for themselves in the academic environment to get their needs met and to optimize their own learning experience (e.g. should they sit closer to the teacher, so they will not be distracted by other students and other visual input? What is the best way to ask for clarification on an exercise? What if the teacher cannot help the student in that moment--are there other resources readily available? What is the best way to take a test?). Finally, I work with students to feel confident with their learning style and learning process. This is key to reducing the stress and the fear that often obscure the free flow of ideas and information. Once this is established, a student can increase his or her ability to apply critical thinking to a problem or question. These practices are all part of establishing a healthy academic environment on a personal level.

Violin

I have been playing violin for 7 years. My first instrument was piano, which I began to play in elementary school and continued throughout my life. I am a member of the San Francisco Scottish Fiddlers and play tunes in concerts and local gigs. I am also studying bluegrass. I am very patient. I would only be able to work with beginners.
