Hello,

Do you find yourself struggling to understand science and math? Find your instructor confusing? Wondering just what complex numbers are good for?

Don’t worry, I can help. Most people can master science and math subjects with a bit of help – they just need motivation, explanations from someone familiar with the material, and a bit of practice.

Why bother with math and science? Well, math and science topics, whether they are at the high school or college level, are the tools we use to understand the physical world around us. Whether or not one wishes to pursue a career in the sciences, it is generally useful to have a better appreciation of our surroundings, and we improve our ability to understand and appreciate our surroundings through math and science.

About me: I received my PhD in chemistry (spectroscopy) from the University of California (go Bears!). I am married and have two children who benefit from my being a stay at home parent. Tutoring students gives me the satisfaction of helping others better understand the universe while earning a bit of cash to keep my kids flush in books and video games.

Study Skills,

Study Skills

I am a Ph.D. chemist who has taught at the university and high school level. It is my experience that problems with study skill generally result from lack of routine, failure to write down assignments, and failure to take the assignment seriously. I stress that students should keep a notebook, and this notebook should include homework assignments with dates due and exam schedules for all classes. Students should take the notebook home each night and refer to it at a set time in order to keep up with assigned work. This set time should be as early as possible following school, and assignments should be checked off or otherwise marked once completed. (I have found that the act of physically marking an assignment as 'done' greatly increases the likelihood of doing the work.) The main goal is to encourage daily work on assignments while the lessons are still fresh in mind and to prevent the student from falling behind. Establishing such a routine vital to good study habits.

Test Preparation

Praxis,

Praxis

I am a native speaker of American English with several peer-reviewed scientific publications. I am a graduate of the University of California, where I received a BS. and PhD. in chemistry. I have done quite well on several standardized tests, including the general and subject (chemistry) Praxis exams. I recommend students prepare for standardized tests by working through practice exams for relatively short periods of time several times a day. This gives them familiarity with the test format while identifying areas to focus on during tutoring sessions.
TEAS,

The TEAS exam tests potential nursing students in the subject areas of reading comprehension, math, science, and language usage. I am a PhD. chemist with multiple peer-reviewed publications, a native speaker of Standard American English, and a part-time grant writer for non-profit agencies.

Knowledgable and Patient

John explained concepts to me very clearly and I really understood the problems at the end of our session! He went above and beyond to answer my questions and was a big help in preparing for my physics exam. I will definitely come back if I need help in the future!

Very Helpful and Knowledgeable

John worked with me on some IR spectroscopy and MS Spectroscopy problems and helped me learn concepts beyond solely identifying the functional groups presented. Definitly recommend!

Very Knowledgeable With Clear Relatable Explanation

I am in my second year of chemistry in college and he was very knowledgeable about the chapter we are on. He explained the topics using real-life things that I understood such as skateboarding or a boulder rolling down a hill. He was very patient and knew the answer to every question I asked, which I appreciated. 10/10 on his chemistry skills 10/10 on people skills 10/10 great tutor all around! I will be scheduling another lesson.

patient and great with explanations.

John reviewed a calculus assignment with me and I have ordered a few workbooks based on his suggestion to review and practice Calc I concepts. I look forward to working with him again!

Excellent Tutor

John has been tutoring my son in both algebra 2 and chemistry. My son resisted the idea of tutoring but John's approach is a refreshing change from school. He takes the time to explain the material fully so that it makes better sense to my son. John's experience, background and love of math and science is evident. He also takes the time to figure out what best motivates the student in front of him. I wholeheartedly recommend John if your child is struggling in school. My son's grades have already shown improvement and he has regained his confidence in his ability to master these subjects. Priceless!

Just what my son needed

We are so pleased to have found John. My son has vastly improved his skills and patience in doing Algebra 2. He brought his grade up from a B to an A. I highly recommend John. He is patient and kind. (In addition to the fact that he has an extensive knowledge of Math)

Knowledgable & Patient Chemistry Teacher

John communicates well and has a clear understanding of Chemistry. He's worked with our daughter 11th-grade chemistry a couple times now and she is pleased with his instruction and guidance each time. I recommend John as a Tutor.
