twice the sum of a number and negative five = 2(x+(-5))

 

four times the number decreased by three = 4x-3

 

2(x+(-5))=4x-3

 

2(x-5)=4x-3

 

2x-10=4x-3

 

-10+3=4x-2x

 

-7=2x

-3.5=x

 

so the number is=x=-3.5
