subtract the polynomials

When you subtract polynomials, you need to change each term inside the second parenthesis into its opposite.

 

This is the original problem

(3x^3 -8 x^2 +8)  -( 8-8x^2+8x^3)   Change the minus sign between 

                                                         the parenthesis and change all 

                                                         terms on the second parenthesis

                                                         into its opposite.

(3x^3-8x^2+8) + (-8 + 8x^2-8x^3)   Combining like terms

                      -5x^3

 

Why? 3x^3-8x^3= -5x^3

         -8x^2+8x^2= 0

              8+ (-8)=   0
