We have a, b, and c. Here's what we know:
a = b - 2
c = b + 2
a + b + c = 42
Let's plug in the variable values:
b - 2 + b + b + 2 = 42
Simplify:
3b = 42
Divide both sides by 3, and you'll have b. Subtract 2 to find a, and add 2 to find c.
