An outlier is, by definition, outside of the main data group. If you have a histogram, just look for a value standing well away from the others at the high or low end. You can also see it numerically. For example, if you listed the heights of people in a college class and one student was also a college basketball player, his or her height would likely be significantly higher than the other students'.
