Really bad at word problems. Could some one help me please?

Two factory plants are making TV panels. Yesterday, Plant A produced
6000
fewer panels than Plant B did. Five percent of the panels from Plant A and
2%
of the panels from Plant B were defective. How many panels did Plant A produce, if the two plants together produced
820
defective panels?

Answer 1

Let x = total number of panels produced by Plant A.

 

Total number of panels produced by Plant B is:

"Plant A produced 6000 fewer panels than Plant B did"      (x+6000)

 

"two plants together produced 820 defective panels?"  means

  Defective Panels from Plant A + Defective Panels from Plant B = 820

      0.05*x                              +        0.02*(x+6000)              = 820

   [note: you may use 5%, 0.05, or 5/100 as needed by the problem.]

 

   5x + 2x +12000 = 82000             [multiply by 100 to get rid of fraction]

       7x = 70000

        x = 10000

"How many panels did Plant A produce?"  Plant A produced roughly 10000 panels.

 

and Plant B produced roughly 16000 panels.

 

Check:

    Does   0.05(10000) + 0.02(16000) = 820   ?

                  500   +   320   =  820   ?

                         820 = 820   ?yes
