To "solve for" y means to isolate it on the left side of an equation. This will result in an expression in terms of x.
So:
6x - 2y = 8
-2y = -6x + 8 [subtract 6x from both sides]
y = 3x - 4 [divide both sides by (-2)]
Check:
Does 6x - 2(3x-4) = 8 ?
6x - 6x + 8 = 8 ?
8 = 8 ?yes
