As you move from right to left each place value is 10 times greater than the value to its right. multiply by 10

 

1's place:         10 raised to the power of 0 = 1

10's place:       10 raised to the power of 1 = 10

100's place:     10 raised to the power of 2 = 100

1000's place:   10 raised to the power of 3 = 1000

...

 

Let's say the number is 493

 

4 --> 4 * (10**2) = 4 * 100 = 400 

9 --> 9 * (10**1) = 9 *   10 =  90

3 --> 3 * (10**0) = 3 *     1 =   3

 

493 = 400 + 90 + 3
