Let x = number of 10s and y = number of 5s. Set up 2 equations: x = 3y; 10x + 5y = 245. Substitute x from first equation into 2nd equation: 10(3y) + 5y = 245, 30y + 5y = 245, 35y = 245, y = 7. x = 3(7) = 21. So he got 21 10s and 7 5s to make total of $245.
